Recap and discussion for Season 1, Episode 9 – Deathwalker

One of the more memorable episodes of Season 1. Deathwalker was a horrible person, reminding me of Hitler’s doctors who performed ‘research’ on humans just because they enjoyed it.

The show opens with Kosh tell Talia that he’d like to engage her services for ‘important business’ and tells her to meet him at the Hour of Scampering, which according to JMS, is around tea-time.

We see a Minbari ship docking at B5 and Na’Toth sees a woman come into the station. She immediately screams and attacks, saying her family has a Shon’Kar against this woman, whom she calls Deathwalker. Deathwalker was a Dilgar researcher who specialized in biochemical, biogenetic, and cyber-organic weaponry and she didn’t shy away from genocide. The Dilgar were defeted 30 years before and they all died out when their sun went nova.

Deathwalker is taken to medlab and G’kar takes custody of Na’toth, telling her she may kill Deathwalker after the narn make a deal with her for something important.

Meanwhile, Talia tells Kosh she needs to understand what he wants. He tells her ‘understanding is a three-edged sword’. Abbut walks in, Kosh asks her to scan him and she says he has nothing to scan. Abbut says something non-sensical.

Franklin can’t identify her species but she heals very quickly. Sinclair identifies her as a Dilgar, though Franklin reminds him that they’re all dead. Franklin has a vial of some serum which he tells Sinclair he’ll analyze.

Senator Hidoshi calls and tells Sinclair he is to send the woman to earth and won’t tell him why.

Deathwalker awakens and tells Franklin she wants to see Sinclair. She says she has been with the Warrior class Wind Swords of Minbar and that her serum retards age and prevents illness, making it almost an immortality serum. She says she will bring it to the galaxy with the help of Earth.

Kosh and Abbut continue to talk nonsense and Abbut offers Talia a Jovian sunspot. She has some bad memory in a room with a lot of mirrors.

Lennier says the Wind Swords are the most militant of the Warrior class.

G’kar offers Deathwalker triple whatever Earth is paying her for her serum and she says she’ll take it if he throws in Na’toth.

Deathwalker is positively identified. Sinclair tells Ivanova, Franklin and Garibaldi that Deathwalker will be ready to go to earth in an hour. Even though no one wants to send her, Sinclair has orders from Earthforce. G’kar calls one of the ambassadors from the League of Non-aligned Worlds to tell them about Deathwalker.

Deathwalker says selling her serum will Honor her people as Garibaldi and the escort come to take her to her ship for earth. The ambassador says they want her tried for war crimes. Sinclair talks them into a vote. They lose the vote: Earth and the League vote to try her while the Minbari, the Narn and the Centauri vote not to and Kosh abstains.

Talia has another unpleasant flashback in her negotiations with Kosh and Abbut.

A Drazi ship comes through the gate to attack B5 then another ship and so on. Sinclair tells them he’s calling a meeting with the non-aligned worlds.

Talia has another flash and Abbut takes his hat off, exposing his brain and some hardwatre from which he remopves a datsa crystal and gives it to Kosh. Kosh tells Talia it has ‘reflection, surprise, terror for the future on it.

Sinclair proposes that after Deathwalker, with their supervision, makes the serum, she will turned over to them for trial.

When they come for her to take her to her ship, she tells them that a life must be sacrificed to save one. That is her revenge, knowing they will kill others for immortality. She is placed aboard her ship and as he leaves, Kosh shows up and a Vorlon ship comes through the gate and blows her ship to bits.

Kosh tells Sinclair, “You are not ready for immortality.”

Talia tells Michael about the thing with Kosh and he tells her the man was a ‘vicar,’ used to record thoughts and such.

Would you like a Jovian Sunspot?

Here is the recipe:

2 oz. Coconut cream
3 T. Cranberry or Cranapple juice
2 T. Orange juice
2 T. vodka
Combine ingredients in an old fashioned cocktail glass in this order: Ice -> Coconut -> Cran-apple Juice -> Vodka -> OJ. Enjoy.

Kosh Naranek: Ahh. You seek meaning.
Talia Winters: Yes.
Kosh Naranek: Then listen to the music, not the song.

Ivanova: [to a Drazi ship threatening the station] Vakar Ashok, our gun arrays are now fixed on your ship. They will fire the instant you come into range. You will find their power most impressive - for a few seconds.

1. What do you think Kosh was doing this for?
2. Why did the Minbari shelter a monster?
3. Do you think Kosh called in a ship or were the Vorlons monitoring things?
4. What do you think of an immortality serum?
