Well, my friends, he did it... we all knew he would and this brings us to the end of Season 3. I give you Z'ha'dum.

Recap and discussion of 3 x 22 – Z’ha’dum

We open with some looking back… to Anna, to the Icaris going to Z’ha’dum then we hear Delenn explain the three nights of watching that the woman does and we see Delenn watching him sleep. We see her pick up a snowglobe and Anna Sheridan walks in and introduces herself.

John asks her what she is doing there and she says all will be explained if he will come back with her to Z’ha’dum.

G’kar shows Ivanova a bunch of thermal mines that they have to defend the station with.

Franklin is running tests and says she is Anna. He has found some scarring on the nape of her neck.

John angrily confronts Delenn, telling her he cannot trust her since she must have known that Anna might be alive. She tries to explain that she does not think the thing that is Anna, is truly his Anna. She says she assumed Anna would rather die than become a servant of the Shadows and that she could not let him go to Z’ha’dum. She tells him she loves him.

Londo is drinking heavily when Vir asks him what is the matter. He says he has been offered a position as advisor on planetary security but he knows it’s a trap to keep him where he can be watched carefully. A man comes up and tells Londo to leave the station if he values his life.

Stephen finds that Anna’s scars are the same as those of Carolyn Sanderson.

Anna is with John. She is still pressing him to go to Z’ha’dum with her. He says he won’t go until she tells him what happened with the Icarus. She says when the vessel was discovered on Mars, they’d planted a homing device on it and Dr. Chang was following it to Z’ha’dum. She said the crew was killed in an accident and that there is tech there that would give Earth endless energy and cure disease, etc.

John sees the scans from Stephen.

Garibaldi comes to see Sheridan. He gives Mr. G. a list of things to do. Garibaldi realizes what he’s up to. John says he can’t tell anyone and when things are done, they can talk of the weather. As he is packing, we hear Kosh say inside his head, “If you go to Z’ha’dum, you will die.”

Michael gets everything ready. He mentions the weather to John.

John makes a video for Delenn.

He and Anna leave for Z’ha’dum. She tells him the Vorlon tech on his White Star will kill the ‘aliens’. He tells her they will go down to the planet in a shuttle, leaving the ship in orbit.

Franklin tells Ivanova that John is gone and that he has found a problem with Anna.

Anna introduces John to the ‘middle man’ – Justin. He babbles some silly BS.

Delenn looks at the message: He said he went to stop the Shadows and to maybe change the future in regards to Londo that he saw on B4. He says he wants to stay alive but that he knows it’s a trap.

Justin talks about the 2 races who stayed when the first ones left: the Shadows and the Vorlons. He said they stayed to help the younger races. The Vorlons were the Lords of Order while the shadows believed that growth came through conflict and chaos. In other words, the Shadows believe in weeding out the weak.

Shadow ships come out of hyperspace all around Babylon 5. Ivanova scrambles fighters, but tells them not to fire yet.

Morden speaks about evolving through conflict and talks about the Vorlons manipulating the younger races to their own ends. Anna says they must get all the races to fight, not to unify as John has done with them.

John says Anna is not his Anna. Justin said Anna chose badly and was used in a ship. A shadow slips in the door behind John. Even though they made him give up his weapons, he slipped a gun in anyway. He shoots the shadow.

Susan asks G’kar about using the mines and he tells her that 2 of them are missing.

John is crawling away, bloodied but alive. He hits a button that arms the White Star. Anna comes out and asks him to come back inside.

On the video message to Delenn, John tells her he loves her. She begins to cry.

Kosh tell John to jump. He does just as the White Star comes down through the sky light. Anna screams a shadow scream.

The shadows leave Babylon but not before capturing Mr. Garibaldi.

G’kar says there is a pause in the war and the universe is holding its breath.

*

Quotes:

G’kar’s monologue:

“It was the end of the Earth Year 2260, and the war had paused, suddenly, and unexpectedly. All around us it was as if the universe was holding its breath, waiting. All of life can be broken down into moments of transition or moments of revelation. This had the feeling of both. G’Quan wrote, ‘There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way.’ The war we fight is not against powers or principalities. It is against chaos. And despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope. The death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future. Or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born… in pain.”

*

Questions:

1. Were you surprised when you first saw it? Were you expecting a plot device miracle?
2. Did you notice how much the Shadow agent sent to Londo sounded like Sebastian? I did and it creeped me out.
3. Did you think the John/Delenn courtship was suddenly too fast? They kiss and now she’s doing the ritual 3 night watch?
4. Did Susan feel the explosion at Z’ha’dum? Or just guess?
5. Why was John the nexus? Destiny? Had the Vorlons done it? The Great Machine? Chance?

First of all I apologize for the lack of pictures. My photo-grabbing is primitive and all those beautiful space battle scenes go by so quickly they are a blur. So it's mostly Stephen and why the heck not? This is the culmination of his personal story and it resonates with me more and more as time goes on.

This is a funny episode with the quick back and forth cuts between the inner battle of one man and the epic battle of many. I disliked it back in the day, thinking of Stephen's story as unwanted interruptions to the main action. During one re-watch I watched it in two parts--all of the battle scenes first, fast forwarding through Stephen's story, then later going back to watch his scenes stitiched together. And I found I liked the personal story very much. This time through I was surprised at how little time was spent on Stephen! So I guess like all art, this episode changes with the viewer, and also as the viewer changes. It is one reason I like re-watches.

Recap and discussion of 3 x 20 – And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place

Z minus 14 days
The episode begins with Ivanova talking about Sheridan hardly ever leaving the War Room whiel we seem Garibaldi assigning telepaths to ships. She says Franklin is still on Walkabout. She says Brother Theo is a stabilizing influence (and an irritant) as well as G’kar. G’kar wants to send a Narn guard with every telepath.

Londo tells Vir that G’kar must be dealt with sooner rather than later. Vir says they have more concerns than G’kar. Londo says he wants to draw G’kar to Narn to have him arrested and Vir is going to help him.

Ivanova and Brother Theo wait for some passengers: Reverend William Dexter, a Rabbi, a Buddhist monk and a Muslim cleric. Theo and Rev. Dexter trade barbs, though not unfriendly ones.

Lord Refa and the Centauri Minister Virini also come aboard to see Londo.

John is in the War Room and he tells Delenn that he can’t figure out what the Shadows are doing: The hit randomly yet they are organized and successful. Delenn tells him that he is crotchety, grouchy, etc. and he needs some rest – she has agreed to have dinner with the ministers in 2 standard hours!

Vir tells Londo that Refa and the Minister have arrived. Londo tells Vir he must go and tell G’kar where Na’toth is being held – there will be a trap for him there. He is to be told that she is being held in a cell under the building that housed the Kha’Ri. Mollari’s guards will be waiting. Vir refuses but Londo threatens his family.

Virinio tells Refa that their feuding must end as it is affecting the Emperor. Londo walks in

Vir goes to G’kar’s quarters.

Virini tells Londo the same thing he told Refa, that the feuding must end. Londo assures him that he will prove his loyalty by deed soon.

John and Delenn are having dinner with the ministers and they tell them how earth really does have a resistance and they all have info on data crystals that they smuggled out in Rev. Dexter’s bible.

G’kar tells Garibaldi that he needs to be smuggled to Narn ASAP – now!

Vir is taken by a group of Centauri.

Dexter wants to have a revival meeting before he goes.

Vir is brought before Refa, who forces info from him on G’kar with a telepath. He leaves him locked up.

Dexter advises John to let his friends and/or she (Delenn) closer to him instead of pushing them away. After being a bit rude, he realizes Dexter is right.

Z minus 13 days
G’kar arrives home… the world is dusty and cold from the bombs. G’Dan tells him what he wants to do is risky. He agrees but they have to do it.

Refa is on the Narn homeworld as well, telling Drigo how nice the building looks as a replica of the Emperor’s palace on Centauri prime. Refa asks for 7 guards to accompany h8im on a mission.

Sheridan and Delenn are in the War room, looking over Shadow attacks when they realize what the Shadows are doing - leaving one area alone so many refuges and such will go there for safety THEN they think the Shadows will attack for maximum effect. When John mentions that he must think like the enemy, Delenn drags him away.

G’kar leads a group of Narns under the Kha’Ri building.

Londo knocks out the guard and frees Vir, who tells him Refa knows all.

Refa and the guards are waiting for G’kar.

At the revival meeting, Rev. Dexter says fear, ignorance and the one who tells you to hate that which is different.

Refa tells the guards to attack G’kar. They do nothing. A hologram of Londo appears and Londo tells Refa that the guards are loyal to House Mollari and he tells Refa that he killed what was most dear to him and he killed huis friend PM Malachi, and that he threatened Londo’s position and weakened the defenses of the Centauri people.

Rev Dexter asks all to rise.

Londo: G’kar has documents that implicate Refa in colluding with the Narn, which he will place in Refa’s clothes to be found after he is killed.

The congregation begins to sing No Hiding Place Down here as Refa runs for his life. They catch him and we see G’kar walk away as they are beating him.

Londo gives the data crystal found on Refa to Minister Virini. It proves Refa was a traitor. Virini says he will report this to the emperor.

Vir is angry at being used but Londo seems to think it no big deal.

John and Delenn are aboard the White Star in space and Delenn tells him she has a surprise, something that will make them more able to fight the Shadows. They come out of hyperspace to a whole fleet of White Stars. John is speechless.

They kiss.

Quotes:

Reverend Dexter: Every day, here and at home, we are warned about the enemy. But who is the enemy? Is it the alien? Well, we are all alien to one another. Is it the one who believes differently than we do? No, oh no, my friends. The enemy is fear. The enemy is ignorance. The enemy is the one who tells you that you must hate that which is different. Because, in the end, that hate will turn on you. And that same hate will destroy you.

Garibaldi: This isn’t going to be easy.
G’Kar: Nothing worthwhile ever is.

*

Questions:

1. Do you think that G’kar knew the whole plan the whole time OR did he go simply to rescue Na’toth and then find out the plan?
2. Did you find the juxtaposition of the song and Lord Refa’s fate jarring? Ironic? Even darkly humorous? Just? Tell me.
3. I have to say, in many ways, the joke is still on Londo, since Refa didn’t kill Adira. What do you think? Did Londo’s plot make you like him more or less.
4. The kiss???
5. What did you think of the clergymen spies?

EDIT: Bonus: When Dexter tells John 'she' loves you, are you sure he meant Delenn? I have come to believe, over many watchings, that he could have meant Susan Ivanova. Discuss.

Recap and Discussion of 3 x 18 – Walkabout

This is probably no one’s favorite episode. There is not any real reason for the romance. I am not a detractor of Dr. Franklin, though. I actually like him and his stubborn idealism. I just preferred the bromance he had with Marcus in later eps.

We open with Londo raising hell with Garibaldi about the Narn heavy cruiser that has just arrived at Babylon 5. Garibaldi basically tells him to blow it out his ear.

Lyta comes into Medlab, asking after Kosh. Dr. Hobbs tells her that Dr. Franklin has taken a personal leave and that Kosh was most certainly dead when they got to him.

Ivanova tells Garibaldi that the captain has called a meeting of the war council and that the new Vorlon ambassador is about to arrive. Garibaldi reluctantly tells her that Sheridan is outside, walking around. We see the Vorlon ship come out of a jumpgate and rise up to where Sheridan is standing. It appears to have a message on its side but JMS assures us it is meaningless.

G’kar meets with Na’Kal, the captain of the warship. He says they have about 10 ships left but are cobbling together more from parts. He mentions how good the breen is and we get G’kar’s famous Swedish meatball thing… You gotta love the little hint at conspiracy he throws out there. He tells Na’Kal that they must help defend B5 because “if Babylon 5 falls, we all fall.”

Sheridan and Ivanova wait for the Vorlon and they chatter away at him and he seems indifferent. We do find out that they will keep Kosh’s death a secret at the request pf the Vorlons. When they ask him his name, he says we are all Kosh and gets no friendlier or forthcoming.

Garibaldi finds Stephen and asks him what he is doing. Stephen explains the concept of the Walkabout and says he is on a journey to find hid real self. Garibaldi thinks he’s silly but there is little he can do.

The new Vorlon sees where Kosh died and then Lyta comes to him. He appears to torture her a bit as she explains that she carried none of Kosh and was on a mission he sent her on. The new Kosh is a bit of an ass.

John asks to talk to Lyta and asks her about the new Vorlon. She tells him it has been a very long time since one of them died and they are taking it hard. While John is chattering away, she hears Kosh speak but it was John.

He tells he her wants her to do something.

Garibaldi visits G’kar and reads him the riot act about helping Sheridan when he asks.

We then go to the plot part that annoys me. Stephen goes to a bar and listens to a woman sing.
The meeting of the War Council – Sheridan says they’ve found a weakness and he wants to take Lyta out, find a Shadow ship and test it. Ivanova is concerned what they’ll do against the Shadow ship and John asks for some of the others to go with him. Delenn volunteers the Minbari but G’kar demurs.

Cailyn comes to Stephen’s table and they talk.

G’kar asks Na’Kal but he feels it is a fool’s mission.

Sheridan, Lyta and his skeleton crew head out to Sector 90x10x47, where there have been 3 Shadow attacks in the last week.

Back to Stephen – he goes home with the woman and tells her she can do better. He asks if there’s anything he can do and she asks for some apinkillers. He rebukes her for drinking too much and tells her no.

Meanwhile Sheridan asks Lyta if she’s nervous and she asks him how he found out Kosh died. He told her he just did. They pick up a distress call and know the Shadows are there. They go in to the Shadows attacking all over.

Lyta says she needs to be in line of sight. She tries and is too weak to keep it up. John touches her and she sees him reacting to Kosh’s death and she gets angry and does focus, bringing the Shadow ship to a halt. Lennier says if they’ll have to take the jump engines offline to kill the Shadow, which means they’ll be dead in the water for a bit. Sheridan gives the order.

Cailyn gets up, dresses, takes something from Stephen’s pack and leaves while he sleeps.

Lyta is exhausted and tells Sheridan that she thinks they got off a distress call. In a few seconds, four more Shadow ships emerge from hyperspace. They use the three telepaths on the Minbari ship to control three of them but Lyta is too weak to control the 4th. They run and just before the Shadows destroy them, G’kar comes through a jump gate and he and B5 kill the 4th ship. A whole host of alien ships come through and the Shadows escape.

Stephen awakens to find Cailyn passed out on the floor and he finds the drug vial beside her. He calls for help and naturally assumes she is a junkie.

She is in Medlab and Stephen is talking to Dr. Hobbs, who says she is giving her the same pain med. Stephen objects. Dr. Hobbs tells him that Cailyn has terminal neuro-paralysis and she was treated by his predecessor. She says he has about 6 months left.

He talks to Cailyn, who tells him she wants to stay on B5 and sing as long as she can because her music gives people hope. He tells Dr. Hobbs to make sure she has whatever treatment she needs for as long as she needs it.

Lyta tells the new Vorlon that she might know who carries a piece of Kosh.

The show ends with Stephen listening to Cailyn sing.

Quotes:

G’kar, on Swedish neatballs: It's an Earth food. They are called Swedish meatballs. It's a strange thing, but every sentient race has its own version of these Swedish meatballs! I suspect it's one of those great universal mysteries which will either never be explained, or which would drive you mad if you ever learned the truth.
An exchange between Londo and Garibaldi:
Londo: And what guarantee will you give me that the cruiser will not open fire on a Centauri vessel as it approaches Babylon 5, hmmm?
Garibaldi: The same guarantee I gave you when I said that none of the other Narns would break into your room in the middle of the night and slit your throat.
Londo: Mr. Garibaldi, you have never given me that promise.
Garibaldi: You're right. Sleep tight.
*
Questions:
1. Did the one night stand serve any real purpose?
2. G’kar says “If Babylon 5 falls, we all fall.” Do you think this is true? Why?
3. Did you notice that the Minbari telepaths did not seem to need line of sight to interfere with the Shadow ships? Are they stronger than human telepaths?
4. What do you think of the new “Kosh”?
5. Do you think G’kar actively rallied the other ships to join him or do you think joined simply because changed their minds when he did?
6. JMS wrote Cailyn’s songs. What did you think?
7. Why did they let the Shadows escape?

Recap and discussion of 3 x 15 – Interludes and Examinations

Despite the innocuous name, this episode packs a wallop. JMS notes that we should always watch out for eps with dull names.

We open with Ivanova making a diary entry. She mentions the Shadows are hitting randomly all over the Rim area. That things are crazy on B5 since they went out on their own. What we see us Norden coming onto the station and passing something to member of what we assume to be station security, who gives Morden a bottle.

She mentions that people have different ways of coping as we see Franklin becoming a complete ass in Medlab and almost costing a patient his life.

She says Kosh has been scarce. And says “When the Vorlon goes to ground, I worry.”

She mentions that Londo is the same. We see him telling Vir that he needs a suite prepared – Lady Adira is coming to visit him and he wants to pull out all the stops.

We see Mprden leave a dead guard then we see his Shadow companions appear all around him.

Next, Morden visits Londo and tells him they are disappointed that he has turned Refa against them and that the Centauri have stopped their attacks on their neighbors. He tells Londo they’d like Refa to continue as he was before. Londo blows him off, saying, “There is nothing you can do me, Mr. Morden, that has not already been done.” (You should know that something really bad will come of this!)

Baribaldi goes to talk to Franklin about his stim use and Franklin denies ha has a problem and blows Garibaldi off.

Delenn and Sheridan in the War Room. She mentions that he needs reast and he mentions the Shadow hits all over. Delenn confirms that this is what they did last time as well. When Sheridan asks why, Delenn can’t or won’t tell him.

He says they need allies but the other aliens will not throw in with him unless he can show them he has some kind of superior strength and he can’s show that unless he has allies. Delenn says he is sounding more like Kosh. He gets an idea.

Garibaldi sits down in the Zocalo with one of Dr. Franklin’s staff, Dr. Hobbs, and asks her if she will help him access the results of Franklin’s too tests for the last year. She tells him she will not, that he should go through proper channels. He asks her if she’ll tell him where to find the files for when he does have legal access. She wrote it on a piece of paper and hands it to him as Franklin watches angrily.

We switch to Vir ordering the amenities for Adira’s suite and becoming embarrassed ordering intimate things for her. He notices Morden, who greets him though Vir actively tries to avoid him. Vir tells him to drop dead and goes on his way. Morden talks to the man who Vir was ordering all the Amenities from.

Garibaldi goes to Medlab to access the files but can’t bring himself to do it. Franklin walks in, asks him why he didn’t do it. Garibaldi said he figured Franklin kl ew on some level that he had a problem. Franklin said he checked his own bloodwork and he found out what he already knew. He has a stim addiction. Garibaldi tells him the ball is in his court.

Sheridan goes to see Kosh, to ask for their help but Kosh refuses, saying it is not yet time and that their numbers are not sufficient yet. Sheridan presses, yelling at Kosh. Kosh shocks him with something then yells at him, calling him impudent. After a bit of arguing, Kosh finally does agree, but he tells Sheridan that the will not be around to help him if he goes to Z’ha’dum.

Sheridan comes into the C&C as Ivanova reports more attacks then reports that the Vorlons have attacked the Shadows and driven them back.

Londo and Vir await Adira’s arrival and become concerned when she does not disembark from her ship. A few moments later, Dr. Hobbs md a team from Medlab emerge with a body bag on a gurney. It is Adira and they don’t know what killed her. Londo tells Dr. Hobbs to check for poison, remembering when he poisoned Refa.

Morden pays someone in diamonds and another man comes and whispers something that makes Morden frown – one must presume it is news of the Vorlon attack.

Ivanova says the other worlds are now eager to join them and Sheridan says he should thanks Kosh but Delenn says he should get some rest as it is after 2 am.

We see Morden make his way to Kosh’s chambers and let himself in with something like a key (or the tool R2D@ used in Star Wars to tap into computers). His shadow companions attack Kosh.

Sheridan is dreaming of his father, who tells him he is sorry he did not finish with him and tells him to fight the war his way. He also tells him, “As long as you are he, I’ll be here.” Sheridna realizes it’s Kosh and he wakens when Kosh dies.

All that is left is his encounter suit and his ship. Delenn says they will put his things ion his ship and it will do the rest. They have nothing to tell them who killed Kosh. Delenn says the Vorlons will send a replacement.

Londo reads the autopsy report. She was poisoned. Morden tells Londo how upset Refa was with him, making Londo believe that Refa had Adira poisoned. Londo tell Morden wants his help for revenge on Refa and the for the safety of his people – he no longer cares about anything else.

Franklin resigns to straighten his life out.

Kosh’s ship takes off with his stuff and will burn itself in a nearby sun after it grieves.

*

Quotes:

Morden: Anything I can do to help?
Vir Cotto: Um…Short of dying? No, can't think of a thing.

Londo: And you will help me, Mr. Morden, to strike them down. Give me this, and the safety of my people…and let the rest of the galaxy burn. I don't care anymore.

Sheridan to Kosh: Up yours!

*

Questions:
1. Were you surprised to see Morden? Did he cause most of the trouble or was he just there by coincidence and decided to help stir it up?
2. Was Kosh’s death a surprise?
3. Do you think Londo can’t see through Morden’s actions or that he won’t? Or maybe both?
4. Why did Kosh appear as David Sheridan?
5. Do you feel sympathy for Dr. Franklin? Is he a sympathetic character?
6. How were the Vorlons going to increase their numbers? To get ready for the Shadows?

Recap and Discussion 3 x 14 – Ship of Tears

ISN returns but it is simply the voice of Clark now.

Sheridan is out trying out a new Starfury when a distress call comes in from B5 space. It’s a Black Omega Starfury and Bester is inside.

Bester is allowed onboard and he tells Sheridan that there is a Shadow vessel with weapon components in hyperspace and he wants Sheridan to help him catch it. Bester says the Shadows have infiltrated Psi Corps and that Clark is being directed by the Shadows as well. He says telepaths can find ships in hyperspace… that it magnifies their abilities.

G’kar tells Ivanova he wants in.

Sheridan agrees and he takes Bester into hyperspace aboard his White Star.

Delenn tells G’kar that the Grey Council allowed them to be defeated by the Centauri supported by the Shadows because they could not show their hand yet. G;kar tells her he understand but is not yet ready to forgive her.

Once Sheridan and Bester find the ship, the crew commits suicide and another Shadow ship approaches but backs away. Inside they find 100 cryo tubes with telepaths in them. One of them is Bester’s lover Carolyn, a blip he’d fallen in love with. She was pregnant with his child, Franklin tries to thaw and wake her but she is mad,. She gets loose and attaches herself to the wiring in the room. She says to Bester that telepaths interrupt the voices in her head and asks him what have they done to her.

Bester leaves, saying he’ll do anything to help them.

Delenn tells them the war room is ready. G’kar says it is a great day,

Susan says she still doesn’t trust Bester.

Garibaldi is reading the Book of G’Quon and translating it as he goes. He figures out that a thousand years ago, when the Shadows lived on the Narn homeworld is when the Narn telepaths were destroyed by them because they could not live in their presence. They know that telepaths are usable as a weapon against the Shadows.

They get news that the Shadows have openly attacked in Brakiri space.

~~~
Quotes:
Franklin: “He who controls information controls the world.”
G’kar: “I can only wait so long.
Ivanova: “I thought your patience is infinite.”
G’kar: “Since space and time are curved the infinite sooner or later bends back upon itself and ends up where it began. And so have I.”
*
Questions:
1. Did you or do you believe Bester has changed?
2. Were you surprised that the cargo was humans?
3. Were you surprised that Bester told them what he saw in Carolyn’s mind?
4. Did you like the new war room?
Hi! Can I just say that I love the Arthurian myths and also love attempts to bring them into the current time or into the future? Also that Michael York is yummy? This is another Marcus episode, as well as a Stephen episode. The Garibaldi back-story I find annoying and a wee bit appalling. Abuse of his office, just a little? Stephen's behavior I also find appalling although it sheds more light on the single-mindedness of his character (or should I say stubbornness). The scenes with Arthur and G'Kar are a joy. Marcus and Stephen are also good togther whether serious or light-hearted. All in all a rather good filler episode, with a little background on the Rangers and the Earth-Minbari War, and some ramifications for Our Arc.
Recap and Discussion for 3 x 12 – Sic Transit Vir
We begin the episode with Ivanova standing naked in the C&C then waking up screaming.
We see Vir on Centauri Prime – a minister of some sort tells him that the Emperor likes his reports from Minbar but they do sound a lot like Londo wrote them. Vir tells he helped. Then the minister tells Vir a joke: What is more dangerous than a room full of angry Narns? One angry Narn with a key. Vir laughs nervously and goes back to his room, which is full of angry looking Narns.
Susan tells John she’s been having nightmares. He tells her she must have something unsettled in her mind.
Londo is trying to kill a bug when finally a young woman comes in.
John and Delenn meet and he asks her for a date – rather awkwardly.
Vir arrives back on B5.
Vir goes to Londo’s quarters where he is introduced to Lyndisty, who is to be his wife.
Londo has another bug.
Zack tells Ivanova that someone from Centauri named Abrahamo Lincolni has been sending Narn offworld with false papers. They gape at one another when they see who has done this.
Vir is nervously getting to know Lyndisty.
Vir tries to explain to Ivanova why he is sending Narn to camps – they are safer than where they are and safer as well. He is running a sort of underground railroad.
John had made flarn for Delenn and judging by her expression, it’s awful but she’s saved by the bell when an attack is reported and John goes running.
A Narn has attacked Vir and Lyndisty, but is thwarted by Sheridan and the security team led by Zack. They end up shooting the Narn. Before he is killed the Narn says it is a Blood oath.
Ivanova reports the blood oath bit to Sheridan and they are all puzzled at why anyone would want to kill Vir, most of all Vir. Lyndisty fixed his injury. Ivanova tells him that the Narn had a pouch brother who will try to finish the blood oath.
Vir asks for romance advice from Susan who finally tells him to behave with enthusiasm, sincerity, compassion and humor.
Delenn is helping John with his buttons since he was injured in the scuffle with the narn who attacked Vir and Lyndisty. John almost kisses Delenn when Ivanova interrupts and calls him to Londo’s quarters. Susan calls Vir out about the camps in front of Londo, telling Sheridan about them all being dead. Londo is appalled as only Londo can be after he finds out that the Narn were sent away rather than killed.
Lyndisty helps Vir, tending his wounds. Lyndisty tells Vir what she really thinks of the Narn, that they are lesser and not even people. She has the other Narn tied up for Vir to kill. She says she has killed many with her father, helping to burn villages and to put Narn to sleep, as he culled the herds of Narn. Vir is appalled at her.
We cut away to Londo yelling at Vir about going native on Minbar and about how Lydisty is going home and postponing their wedding.
Susan shows John how she made an identity for Abrahamo Lincolni so they could continue to use it if need be.
Virt says goodbye to Lynduisty. She says she’ll wait for him.
“Humans can be a very depressing people. “
Questions:
1. What did you think of the bug in Londo’s room? Did you hear the sound it made?
2. So was Vir inspecting the throne because of Lady Mirella’s prediction that he’d be emperor someday?
3. Do you think G’kar knows anything about what Vir is doing?
4. Lyndisty gave me the creeps… as a young child in the south, I heard older people talk about African Americans that way… not about killing them but that they were somehow lesser than white people were. It was not unusual to hear things like coming from lovely mouths. Comments?
5. The first you saw it, were you yelling ‘Kiss her!’ to John? Do you like silly, giddy John in love?
It's the Party Episode! Everyone loves a party, but mostly it's Delenn who wants to throw one. She calls her party a 'ceremony' and a 'ritual' but whatever. And, sadly, no one wants to come.
All kidding aside, I found re-watching this episode profoundly thought-provoking with both personal and political ramifications still to be digested. Worth the effort, even with the distraction of realizing this is an episode primarily about Marcus and his back-story. It sets up Marcus' fate, and Lennier's. They really are mirror images in many ways.
Apparently it's not just the episode where John admits his fe-e-elings. Who knew?
