Recap and Discussion for 4 x 1 – The Hour of the Wolf

A new season with answers and questions and much more. This episode has enough stuff for 3 eps yet it’s all there and all done well.
We see the newer and wiser Citizen G’kar, the Londo we actual learn to love and one crazy ass bastard in this episode.

~

Seven days after Z’ha’dum and G’kar says Ivanova seems lost. Londo has returned home. Delenn sits and prays and meditates…

He also says change is coming and two questions must be answered: 1. Where is Garibaldi. And 2. What happened to Sheridan at Z’ha’dum?

The episode begins at 5:30 am with Ivanova’s alarm - giving her messages and reminders while she sits, having not slept at all. Later we see her arguing with an alien before Delenn reminds them that they owe Sheridan for saving them. G’kar reminds them that the war is not over but in the end, they say since Sheridan is gone, they must attend to their own and begin leaving B5.

We join Londo on Centauri Prime, where he speaks to the odd little minister. He says he’s met Cartagia twice, once when he was a drooling baby and the second time when he was a teen looking up dresses. He remarks that he expects not much has changed.

He meets him. Cartagia has short hair, which Londo doesn’t like. The emperor tells Londo that he called him home for 2 reasons: 1. Londo has experience and sees the ‘big picture’. 2. Londo was requested.

Back on B5, Vir meets with Ivanova and tells her that Sheridan was taken to an underground city on Z’ha’dum and that his White Star crashed into the city with 2 500 megaton nukes which exploded and made a 2 mile chasm. Sheridan must be dead and must have taken many of the shadows with him. Perhaps even Morden.

Back on Centauri Prime, Londo goes into his quarters to find a burned and blistered Morden waiting for him. Morden tells him that he will soon be recovered. Morden makes some bad puns about ashes and shadows then tells Londo that he is the person who requested Londo be here. He tells Londo that they have had to seek outside assistance sooner than they hoped because of what Sheridan did. Cartagia will loan them a piece of Centauri Prime.

Londo says the emperor is mad… Morden reminds him that he and Refa put the emperor in place. He tells Londo he will be their liaison to the royal court. When Londo tries to refuse, Morden says he will do it because he is drawn to power and because he fears what others might do in his place.

Delenn tries to talk to the Vorlon but he refuses to do anything at all. He says Sheridan opened an unexpected door but will not elaborate. Delenn is angry and tells him that she no longer respects the Vorlons and the not Kosh tells her that is not relevant.

Zack is checking out Garibaldi’s quarters when he finds someone there… he think its Garibaldi at first but it’s G’kar wearing G.’s hat. G’kar says he fears that garibaldi has been forgotten in all the other happenings. G’kar asks if Daffy is one of G.’s household gods. Zack says he’s kinda like the Egyptian god of frustration – they laugh. Zack says hwat he thnks doesn’t matter and G’kar says our thoughts form the universe, they always matter. G’kar says he will search for Michael.

Londo is hunting his coat as the little minister comes in and tells him Cartagia has something to show him – a glorious day. Londo follows out into the sand garden where he sees hundreds (perhaps thousands) of shadow ships coming over, exactly as they were in his dream (vision). Cartagis has given them Selini in exchange for making him a god. When Londo challenges the sacrifice of the Centauri people, Cartagia tells him that no sacrifice is too great in order for him to become a deity.

Londo realizes how truly insane the emperor is as he backs toward the doors. Once outside, he mentions to the little minister that Cartagia mad and the minister shushes him, telling him that those who end up disappearing and there is a rumor that Cartagia keeps their heads on his desk and talks to them late at night.

Ulkesh won‘t tell Lyta what they plan but she senses something dark in him.

Londo calls Vir at b5 and tells him to come right away. He asks if something is wrong and Londo says everything is wrong. “Conspiracies require more than one person and I trust no one here.”

Cartagia goes into a dark room and he begins to talk to a line of heads on his desk.

Lyta visits Susan and she tells Lyta of the Hour of the Wolf, between 3 and 4 in the morning all you can see are problems and trouble. She says she’s been in the hour of the wolf for 7 days now. The vodka she’s drinking isn’t helping either.

Lyta asks her of she’s gotten anyone to agree to go to Z’ha’dum. She says she can block some of the shadows to keep them from finding out they’re there and she thinks she can find him with her link to Kosh. They get Delenn and off they go. They find nothing and would have been drawn down to the planet except that Lennier had programmed a failsafe into the White Star that would head home if he didn’t touch the controls for a certain amount of time.

Under Z’ha’dum, we see someone walking with a hood over his head.

Vir arrives home. Londo is hunting listening devices. After he removes one, he tells Vir that Cartagia is nuts and has invited the shadows here in exchange for godhood. He tells Vir they must stop the emperor, no matter the cost. “I need a friend and a patriot and you are both.” He says they must kill Cartagia.

It’s 5:30 am again in Ivanova’s quarters. She says Sheridan is dead and they must finish the work he began.

John Sheridan is sitting by a fire. A being walks in – each of them ask “Who are You?” Thy eshare the fire.

Quotes:
Londo to Vir: Vir, it is a terrible truth but as one accumulates power, one loses friends. One only has those who wish to use you and those you wish to use. And yet, in all of this, you have somehow managed to walk through the corridors of power and not be touched. I can only assume you have not been paying attention. And still, the hideous truth is: you are the closest thing I have to a friend. I'm as shocked and dismayed by this as you are, but there it is.

Questions:
1. So many things… what was your favorite part? Mine was when Londo realizes just how batshit crazy the emperor truly is.
2. Is John really on Z’ha’dum? (I might ask this one again next week too.)
3. Morden?
4. Was there too much in this episode?
