Recap and Discussion for Crusade Episode 13 - Appearances and Other Deceits

Recap and Discussion for Crusade Episode 13 – Appearances and Other Deceits

This is not one of my favorite episodes but John Vickery(Neroon) and Wayne Wilderson were absolutely wonderful! Stephen Furst directed this one as well. The story line gave me the creeps.

**

“Recap )

*

Quotes:
Capt. Matthew Gideon: [viewing his new grey red-trimmed uniform in the mirror] I look like a bellhop! (He did!)
Capt. Matthew Gideon: Personal journal, Capt. Matthew Gideon, continuing. It's now three days since our visitors arrived on behalf of Earthgov's political affairs office. There's apparently some concern with how our work here is being perceived back home. They've been assigned to help us. Before their tour is finished, I may have to kill them. Assuming Lt. Matheson doesn't beat me to it.

*

Questions:
1. Which uniforms did you prefer?
2. Do you think the alien really knew anything or was it just trying to save itself?
3. What did you think of Max finally betraying the fact that he is human and has a conscience?
4. Did you like this episode?

Recap and Discussion for Crusade 12 - War Zone

I simply forgot to post this yesterday.

Recap and discussion for Crusade 12 – War Zone

This is the first episode I ever saw. I actually bought copied VHS tapes from Ebay for something like 50 bucks. I believe they were actually in the broadcast order. I will say I think Trace was certainly an underused secondary character. I wrote several adventure and PWP’s with him and Max.

This is copied from another site and I’ll put the link in at the bottom.
”RECAP” )

Quotes
Gideon: I'll do whatever's necessary. If that means turning the entire galaxy upside down and shaking its pockets to see what falls out, then that's what I'll do. I'm not subtle. I'm not pretty, and I'll piss off a lot of people along the way. But I'll get the job done.

Dureena: Yes, I'm a thief, and a damned good one. Need to get inside something? Get out? Tunnel under? Go around? Go through? I'm it. You're going to hit some pretty strange places and you're going to need a lock pick. There isn't a lock made that I can't get through.

Capt. Matthew Gideon: I'd like you to come with me.
Galen: What do you want?
Capt. Matthew Gideon: To find a cure for the Drakh plague before it wipes out all life on Earth.
Galen: Where are you going?
Capt. Matthew Gideon: Anywhere I have to.
Galen: Who do you serve and who do you trust?
[Capt. Gideon considers]
Galen: Who do you serve and who do you trust?
Capt. Matthew Gideon: I don't know. |
Galen: Then I will go with you.

Questions:
1. I am curious what order you first saw Crusade in? Does this episode fit better here or at the beginning as it was shown?
2. Does the backstory here seem all that important to you at this point in the series?
3. Do you remember seeing any of the crew that is first shown ever again?
4. Did you wonder, as I did, why they didn’t use Trace more? I liked him a lot.
5. Any ideas on why Matthew did not know who Galen was?

Recap and discussion for Crusade Episode 11 - The Rules of the Game

Recap and discussion for Crusade Episode 11 – The Rules of the Game

Since I am 2 days later already, I am going to cheat and post a recap from another site.

”Recap” )

I really like this episode as I do most all the Crusade eps. I like Gary Cole. Max is a hoot and Sarah as a badass is just wonderful. I really would have loved to see where they were going with the show… we know the end result but I know the cure wasn’t the main thing.

*

Quotes:
Gideon: Plato once said that for everything that exists, there is a perfect form of it somewhere. A perfect Human being, a perfect chair, a perfect stick; so that everything is a Shadow of that one perfect form. Now, if we follow that train of thought, that means that somewhere in the universe there exists the perfect form of an absolute and complete idiot. And he left here an hour ago.

Max Eilerson: The term is "prodigy." Seven letters, three syllables. I can see why it might give you problems.

*

Questions:
1. Did the Gideon/Lochley romance seem a bit contrived? I thought they were funny together but romance, nah.
2. Did you expect Max to be so protective of his ex? His cat?
3. I wonder how Max knew that Sarah could keep Cynthia safe?
4. Did “the most holy” sound like a Shadow or Vorlon to you? Maybe an emissary like Morden?

Recap and discussion for Crusade episode 10 - Ruling From the Tomb

Recap and discussion for Crusade Episode 10 – Ruling from the Tomb

The Excalibur goes to Mars to a conference on the Plague in which Sarah Chambers is the keynote speaker. Dr. Franklin set this up. Lochley is there to head security but is arguing with Lt Carr, the head of Martian security. Gideon jumps in the middle and as she is assuring Gideon that everything is under control, a man is being murdered.
10_gidloch10_marsdome

Trace Miller is piloting a shuttle with Max and Dureena down to the planet – Max is from Mars. Both men ask to escort Dureena.

While Gideon and Lochley are verbally sparring, Carr calls and reports the murder.

Sarah arrives on mars and meets a nice man named Dr. Lebecque. He speaks to her of faith. She tells him she will put her faith in science to find a cure for the plague. Carr comes for Sarah and takes her to Gideon.
1-_Lebecque

The dead man has the mark of a doomsday cult, Sacred Omega, carved into his body.
10_sacrdomega
Gideon says they’ve sprung up all over since the Drakh Plague was dropped. They take the dead man, Henderson, up to the ship for an autopsy. Trace recognizes him. He says he once worked for the Foundation Church and that Henderson was a healer, both a faith healer and a real doctor. Trace said he almost became a priest but he had a falling out with God. Lochley wants to know more but Trace says it doesn’t have anything to do with the case and Gideon makes her back off.

Lebecque is praying, asking if the butchery was needed and a woman’s voice talks to him. He refers to the voice is Jeanne.

Max runs into Dureena and he gets his wallet lifted. They chase the guy and Dureena has to rescue him. They go to a bar and Max gets into a tiff with another guy.

Lochley is pissed that Gideon wouldn’t let her question Trace further. Gideon says they should look into
Sacred Omega.

Lebecque is praying to Jeanne again.

Gideon asks Lochley to dinner and she says he can come to her quarters.

Max is buying drinks for the man he was arguing with and Trace tries to pick Dureena up. Max and Trace drink.

Lochley has lo mien and Gideon says she’s his new hero… she asks who was his former hero- John Sheridan. She finally tells him she was married to Sheridan.

Lebecque says the bomb they have will destroy the conference center and a mile around it. He says he is afraid of martyrdom and Jeanne tells him he must press on.

Trace gets very drunk and while Max is dancing with Dureena, he leaves and is attacked by the same man who killed Henderson. DNA says it’s the same guy.
10_Dance

Lebecque sets the timer on the bomb.
10_bomb

Max points out to them that Henderson’s killing and Trace’s attack were related so they have Tracew look at photos of the conference goers and he picks out someone else he knows. He says he was a good man and wouldn’t hurt anyone. It is Lebecque though that is an alias.

Gideon has a plan and takes the stage. He tells everyone they only have months and should go home. Jeanne tells Lebecque to let them go.

Security catches them and Gideon shoots Lebecque.

He says Jeanne d’Arc tells him what to do.

Lochley kind of invites Gideon to b5.

Max, Trace Dureena and Sarah are talking about it and Sarah says his juurnal had the words of joan of Arc in it. Max mentions Jesus coming to make peace and men fighting wars over him evewr since.

*

Quotes:
Lochley: Do you believe that there is a supreme being?
Gideon: Aside from John Sheridan?
Gideon: Captain, I have five years to cure the Drakh plague. Do I believe in God? I'll get back to you on that in five years and one day.

Max Eilerson: One man's lunatic is another man's saint or holy martyr. In the words of T.S. Eliot, "Saint and martyr rule from the tomb."

*

Questions:
1. Was Lochley there as a plot device to give Gideon a girlfriend?
2. Why weren’t the attendees vetted more carefully? (This was pre 9/11)
3. Is it possible that whatever drove Trace from the church radicalized Lebecque into becoming a doomsdayer?
4. What did you think of Max and Trace’s ‘testosterone fest’?

Recap and Discussion for Crusade Episode 9 - The Path of Sorrows

Recap and discussion of Crusade episode 9 – The Path of Sorrows

The episode in which we learn some background.

At Galen’s urging, they go to a place called the Path of Sorrow. Neither Max nor Dureena could figure out how to get in. Max said it had the same message in 40 languages: “Enter freely through the path of sorrows.”

He makes Dureena cry and uses her tear to open the door. Even though she gets angry, Galen tells her needed an authentic tear.

They find a glass ball with whirling ‘smoke’ inside. When Gideon steps close, he sees the alien that looks a little like a turtle and a vision of his former ship, the Cerberus with some damage and him outside in an EVA suit.
09_alien

They take the orb back to the ship for further study.

And we find out the backstory for 3 of our characters – there are more questions than answers, it would seem.

Gideon goes to visit the orb and he talks to it and it speaks to him telepathically. We see him on the Cerberus and they are taking fire. There is damage and ensign Gideon is sent outside to survey the damage and repair it. We see a shadow type ship come back and begin firing on the ship. The captain prepares to jump and leave Gideon but the shadow ships destroys it. Gideon sends out a distress signal and a fleet of tiny ships comes by and ignores him until on finally comes back and gets him. It is Galen.

Galen drops him off at an Earth base and we see him being interrogated. They pretend they do believe him and tell him the ship had a malfunction and blew up.

Next, Gideon is playing poker and he wins the Apocalypse Box, a box that’s owner says tells you things but it also lies when it suits it. The man who lost the box then goes outside and steps in front of a speeder. As he dies, he tells Gideon that the only way to get away from the box is to die.
09_box09_shadow

Gideon is very emotional and asks the being if it intends to blackmail him. The little alien tells him he is forgiven.

John goes to see the orb and we see young Psi Corp officer Matheson given charge of giving sleepers to a resistance woman while his superiors are at a big meeting with the top members of Psi Corps. We learn that the war is nearly over and the resistance nearly beaten. When he goes into her, she tells him that he’s been lied to and that all the resistance fighters who have been sent to prison are really dead.
09_Resistance

Later that night, John starts checking them out and finds they were all terminated. When he goes in to give her sleepers, he shoots the liquid on her and no in her. She turns on a beacon for her people to bomb the secret Psi Corp facility with many important Psi Corps members there. John escapes.

He tells the alien that he feels guilty for what he did and the alien forgives him.

Galen comes in and he sees him and a wounded Isabelle. We learn that they were betrayed by three other technomages. She tells him he must go on and that she does believe in a plan. She tells him that she will contact him somehow someday and say his name.
09_isabelle

Galen becomes furious and tries to kill the creature when it offers forgiveness. Gideon stops him and decides to send the being back to the planet. He says another traveler might need it as they had. He and John talk and both of them say they have had the first good night’s sleep since the alien offered them forgiveness.

As soon as they leave the alien, another ship comes in and an alien goes in to see the being.

John stops Galen and tells him a message came in for him from somewhere unknown. It had two words… Galen and Love. Galen discounts it and throws it away.

*

Quotes:
Matheson: You like going nowhere at 120 miles an hour?
Galen: Of course. That is man's natural condition.

Gideon: It's easier not to want forgiveness or to expect it. You just keep trying to fix the mistake so you don't have to ask. But you end up trying so hard to atone for one set of mistakes, you overcompensate and make new ones and then you can never break out of the cycle. You just keep going round and round. No way out. Nowhere to go.

Isabelle: Listen to me, Galen, my dearest love... You must learn one day to forgive God for his decisions. I'm sure it would greatly relieve him. If there is a purpose, if there is a design, if there is a way - after I'm gone I will call to you and say your name and send you a message. And you will know I was right, as usual. Kiss me good night.

*

Questions:
1. Was the alien really offering forgiveness or did it live off of guilt and pain? To the person forgiven, does it matter?
2. Did Isabelle send the message?
3. Was the Shadow ship an Earth ship?

Recap and discussion of Crusade x 8 - Patterns of the Soul

Recap and Discussion for Crusade – episode 8 – Patterns of the Soul

I have been writing Elementary and MCU fiction all day and am tired, need a shower and some food so this may be a bit short.

We open with General Thompson sending Gideon and the Excalibur to Theta 9 to pick up some people who supposedly may be infected with the plague. This idea rankles Gideon and well it should when we find out that Robert Black and his colonists are a group of Black Ops folks who believe that the Excalibur has come to kill them.

The other surprise is that Dureena finds some of her own race on Theta 9. They crashed there as they were being sent somewhere to work. Only 100 of them survived and now they are all of her race that survives at all.

Dr. Chambers got a sample of Black’s blood and the colonist do have the plague as do Dureena’s people.

Thompson orders the colonists sent back to earth and Gideon decides to poke around. He finds out that Black and his crew were in a program Bioweapons Division. He asks Sarah to check the garbage while she’s planetside and she finds food packets contaminated with the plague, so the colonists were infected by someone on purpose. Max tells Gideon the company that made the packets makes people disappear if they are crossed.

Tim, another colonist, takes Sarah hostage and runs away with a shuttle. Gideon talks to him and they hatch a plan.

Gideon contacts Thompson and tells him that the colonists blew up – their shuttle did with no one on it.

He leaves them all on the planet.

Dureena’s people only have a year before the plague kills them.

*

Quotes:
Max to Gideon: Must be difficult for you, being a career military officer, having to play the roles of jailer, ferryman, executioner. That's where we're different. I just do what I'm told. The corporation knows all, sees all, and tells very little. If we make a bad call, we can honestly say that we've acted in good conscience based on the information available. Absolution in absentia, the blessed state of being able to say, "It's not my fault."

*

This is the episode that I think a lot of the series might have been about had it continued… what Earthforce had been doing before the Shadow War and how far reaching the conspiracy goes and how far they will go to cover it up.

Instead of questions, please feel free to comment in any way you want.

And here are a few screencaps:

Recap and discussion for Crusade - episode 7 - Each Night I Dream of Homeome

Recap and discussion for Crusade episode 6 – Each Night I Dream of Home
07_home

This one originally aired last but in JMS’ favored order, it is 7th.

It also has one my favorite quotes:
Gideon to Lochley, when he says he can’t tell her where they are and what they’re doing. She asks what he can tell her and this is his answer: "Never eat anything bigger than your head. Never shoot pool at a place called Pop's. Never eat food at a place called Mom's."

The episode begins with a Warlock Class Destroyer in the middle of nowhere. A shuttle comes aboard containing one of the 12 Senators who were offworld when the Drakh Plague was dropped, Senator Ridley, and someone named David Williams. The Senator tells them they are to proceed directly to certain coordinates and pick up a package. The coordinates are earth. He tell them that they don’t have to worry about the ban on people leaving earth. Everything is worked out and they are operating in secret.
07_Ridley07_williams

Gideon says okay and off they go.

We see Captain Lochley injured in a Starfury and she sends a distress call.

Chambers comes in and Williams says he needs to talk to her. Matheson tells Gideon that Williams is a plumber.

They pick up Lochley’s distress signal and Gideon says they’ll head her way. Ridley orders them not to stop for anything sooo Gideon basically uses the gravity wells in the bays to catch her as she comes into the landing bay. She’s injured and they patch her up but Gideon says they can’t contact B5 yet.

Williams tells Chambers that he was offworld when the plague struck and he wants to be infected so he can go back home and get married to his girlfriend.

They arrive at Earth and are sent a pod. Though Gideon has misgivings, the senator tells him to bring it aboard, that it’s safe. I contains Dr. Franklin, who has come to observe the movement of the virus as Williams is infected.

Williams sneaks a call to home, to his girlfriend and the Drakh pick it up and send ships to intercept.

Gideon visits Williams to see for himself that this is something the man really wants to do and Williams explains how much he loves his fiancé and that he knows the risks.

Franklin and Sarah are talking and Franklin is bothered by giving the plague to someone when he swore an oath to do no harm. Sarah says she will do it for him but he says no.
07_franklin07_Sarah

Franklin is one chamber, Williams in the other and they’re divided by a room. Franklin will turn on a vent into Williams’ room and he will become infected and they will watch on the monitors. The mechanism malfunctions and Sarah ends up opening the vent.

About that time, the Drakh attack and the isobays go into sanitize mode, which means they will burn Williams in a few seconds but Franklin does heroic stuff and saves the day at the last possible second.

The 6 Drakh ships are kicking their butts until Lochley goes out in a Starfury to lead the fight. They can’t open a gate until they charge up so they get the mothership to do it for them following her out and blowing her up.

Franklin and Chambers talk about it being airborne and all air breathers catching it, also about how it seems to search for something to kill and only attacks vital organs. They also noticed that it spreads like something downloading so they decide that it’s a nanovirus and they fear it has a hive mind and is learning.

Everyone goes home and Gideon decides they should visit Lochley on B5 soon.

*

Questions:
1. Do they really get answers? Didn’t we already figure out it was a nanovirus?
2. Did you find the whole Lochley bit sort of gratuitous? What real function did she serve in the episode?
3. Why would the Drakh even bother to come after them? Were they afraid that Franklin and chambers might come up with something?
4. Have noticed that every time they talk about the plague, it is a different thing, more or less? First, it was one thing that would kill everyone, then it attacks only certain organs, then it hunts viruses to infect people with, then it’s a hive mind… ???
5. With the defense grid up and all the watching they are doing to make sure no one leaves Earth infected, how in the world did they not shoot Franklin’s pod?

Recap and Discussion for Crusade - episode 56 - The Well of Forever

Recap and discussion for Crusade – Episode 6 – The Well of Forever

We begin with Mr. Jones coming to check on Matheson for the Bureau of Telepath Integration. John tells Gideon that all of them are called Mr. Jones. He says that Mr. Jones will do a deep scan to deter mine if he is upholding telepath rules for military officers. Gideon doesn’t like it.
06_jones

Galen pops in and asks them to go to a place called the Well of Forever in hyperspace but he will not tell them why. Gideon agrees. Galen says he will link his nav system to the Excalibur because while he has a better nav system, they have more power. Gideon agrees but mostly because he hopes it’ll give them a chance to nose around Galen’s ship’s computer systems. Galen doesn’t exactly tell them why he wants to go there.

Dureenaand Gideon play poker and tells Gideon she thinks Galen isn’t telling them everything.
06_dureenashand

Mr. Jones tells Matheson that he sees the Well of Forever information. John protests, saying that is mission information and Mr. Jones has no right to it. Jones tells him he can do whatever he wants since Joh has a few small violations.

Galen visits Dureena and tells her the Well is a spiritual place and her questions will be answered. All she has to do is ask the right question. He says we all have: something to hide, something to tell, a secret name, a question that unlock our heart. She asks “What is your question?” He says “Why?”

Then we meet the fen – the less said the better.

They reach their destination and there’s nothing there. Gideon is annoyed and they go back and forth until Galen tells him that he has actual control of the ship, which really pissed Gideon off.

Jones asks to talk to Gideon. He tells him that Matheson has some small breeches and that he is going to have him recalled. He says he is answerable to the Senate because he is held to a higher standard. Gideon says that sounds dangerously like discrimination to him. Jones tells him you cannot fight what is.

Gideon asks John if he’d like to go outside and John says it isn’t allowed.

They are there. Into a ‘thing’ and beautiful twist of rock with an atmosphere. Gideon turns around and Galen is gone. Gideon follows him, telling Matheson to keep Max there. Max is drooling over the ‘treasures’.
06_well

Galen has a necklace with a disk on it. He puts it on. Gideon lands.

Max says the stuff down there is worth a fortune.

Dureena tells him that it’s a mausoleum: a place of memory, glory and goodbyes. Max calls it the find of a lifetime.

Galen takes the necklace off and Gideon asks him what’s going on. Galen says her name was Isobelle and she was the best of the order. “Every technomage knows the fourteen words that will make someone fall in love with you forever, but she only needed one….Hello.” He said she had dedicated herself to finding the Well of Forever and he brought her here to rest. He opens the vial and sets her free.

Max and Dureena are arguing over Max wanting to move the whole thing.

Gideon calls Dureena and asks her for a favor for John.

Dureena gets on the bullet car with Mr. Jones and then he runs to Gideon and says that somene is about to explode a bomb… Gideon does a gotcha and tells Jones he won’t tell about the illegal scan and that Jones will leave John alone.

John gets a note about celebrating – he goes out into space.
06_john

Galen asks if he should come back and Gideon says he’s still mad but they agree to let it go. Galen says he will never again betray Gideon’s trust now that his promise is fulfilled. Gideon says he made a promise like that times 300 but hasn’t yet fulfilled it. Galen tells him that then perhaps they will forgive themselves for being alive.
He tells Dureena that they got their answers. Max found there was something he couldn’t have – as we see his files being destroyed by something that looks technomagic. Matheson would have gotten his answers had he gone down to the place. Gideon got his answer but he wasn’t listening.

“What about me? She asks. He says you shouldn’t talk on an open channel. You got your answer about someone who does something not for profit or greed.

Did you find your answer? That might take a little longer, Galen says.

*

Questions:
1. Did the new Bureau of Telepath Integration sound very different than Psi Corps? Didn’t Jones even remind you of PsiCops?
2. Any speculation on Gideon’s question?
3. What did you think of the fen?
4. Do you think Galen was any more at fault than Gideon?

Recap and discussion for Crusade - episode 5 - Visitors from Down the Street

Recap and discussion for Crusade – episode 5 – Visitors from Down the Street

The X-files Episode!

I always thought this one was rather cute. I am an X-files fan, of course.

It begins with Gideon and Matheson riding the tube. Gideon smells something no one else smells. He tells John he wants him to find it.

Gideon is called to the bridge when they pick up a distress signal. We see it. It’s a small flying saucer. They determine it’s a lifepod with two life signs aboard. It’s also a first contact situation. They bring the pod aboard and have to go inside to find the occupants.

The man, Durkani, tells them he will shoot. He comes out and demands to have their lifepod recharged and ready to go in an hour and they will be going back with proof. Matheson pulls a Jedi telepath mindtrick and makes his gun look like a snake and he drops it. Crusade Security gets him and the man says they should have expected such treatment.
05_aliens

Matheson tells Gideon he can’t read their minds because of the telepath rules but he does pick up that they’re confused, frightened, determined and desperate.

We flash back to their home planet and Lyssa, the girl, is in an office, searching for something with her flashlight. She calls Durkani and tells him they’ve ransacked the office and burned everything. He tells her to meet him inn 30 minutes at the usual place and they’ll ‘out there’ to find the proof they need.

Gideon is watching them and drinking coffee. He says he misses the wind back home. ON leave, he’d go outside with his iced tea and sit and let the wind blow on him...

The aliens’ biology is very different from humans so they have no idea why they dress like humans and why they speak English.

Lyssa apologizes to Durkani for not believing in aliens.

Gideon goes in to talk to them. He tells them he doesn’t know what to do with them. Durkani says that there are secret files on the humans buried under the capitol on their planet.

Gideon assures them that Earth has not been watching them at all but they don’t believe him. Humans have been visiting for centuries, devastating parts of their world, ruining lives, and helping to create government agencies to conceal the facts from the public he has dedicated his life to exposing these conspiracies.

They argue back and forth with the alien not really believing Gideon. Durkani tells Lyssa that he thinks Gideon really doesn’t know but that he trusts no one.

Matheson has a man hunting the smell… he’s not found it yet.

The alien says their planet has not made space craft that can venture out of their own solar system, but about 200 years ago, the sightings started. He shows Gideon a photo of a blimp. Gideon is surprised, telling him he’s never even seen one except in books. The alien says his government claims they are swamp gas. He says one crashed that had humans on it – he shows Gideon a drawing of humans – and the government said it was a weather balloon. He pulls something out of a bag – says it’s a weapon or a recreational tool. It’s a golf club. He tells of crop circles and strange musical broadcasts. He says they sent a satellite to Earth and found something – it’s a photo of Mount Rushmore.
05_rushmore05_blimp

Gideon agrees that all these things are form his world but that they don’t prove interference.

Durkani says the girl only joined him a few years ago. He says a man broke into their office. He had a mask on and under it was a human mask then under that he was one of them. He says they realized they were in great danger so they stowed away on a ship and stole a life pod. (We see this as a flashback and we see an older man come to the door after they’ve gone.)

Gideon asks why would Earth do this?

Durkani says education cuts, clothing styles and even language are forced on us by the aliens. He asks Gideon to come to their world. Gideon says he’ll think about it.

Matheson tells Gideon that an unknown ship is approaching. They are being hailed in Enlgosh. The man is the same species as Lyssa and Durkani and he tells them he is Special Agent Kendarr. He has come for Lyssa and Durkani. He will return them home for execution.
05_kendar

They are riding the tube again, heading for wherever the other two are being held. Kendarr mentions the smell. Gideon asks why he is going to execute them but Kendarr gives him no real reason. Gideon says things don’t add up so he’s going to put them all together and let the truth fall out.

Durkani somehow has a weapon and takes Kendarr hostage. They escape into the tube tunnels. Gideon has them tracked and everyone is trying to find them and he wants to know how they got a weapon. Kendarr tells Gideon that the truth has never been in anyone’s best interest.

They find the aliens and the smell too. Gideon even finds a place with some wind.

He is sending them all home. He lets Durkani and Lyssa go then asks Kendarr why. Kendarr says that his planet was prone to civil wars and they decided to use some of the information they licked up from broadcasts to try to control that. They began to blame everything wrong on the aliens and soon the people did as well. They stopped fighting one another and they kept up the conspiracy to keep the peace. Durknai was paranoid so they fed him lots of info to keep the conspiracy going.

Kendarr pulls out a cigarette, lights it and thanks the captain.

After they are gone, he orders john to go to their planet and release probes near their cities with the Interstellar Encyclopedia and a recording of Kendarr’s comments. Gideon says he’s letting the truth back in the room.

In the end, he is sitting in front of one of the tubes – in a lawn chair with his iced tea and the wind blowing in his face.

Recap and discussion for Crusade 1 x 4 - The Long Road

Recap and discussion for Crusade 1 x 4 – The Long Road

We see some miner’s talking about something coming back… we find out it’s a large golden dragon.
04_dragon

Switch to the Excalibur and John Matheson interrupts Gideon, who is shooting and missing baskets in the ship's gym. Matheson tells Gideon that they have been asked to help out in a dispute between the natives and the military on Regula IV, where the natives are interfering with a mining operation that may help with the Drakh plague.

Galen shows up and says he’s going too, but he won’t tell Gideon why.

Galen: "If I'm right, this is definitely something you should see."
Gideon: "And if you're wrong?"
Galen: "Oh well that hardly seems likely, now does it?"

They meet with Captain Daniels, the EF military officer who requested their help. He says there is a chemical on the planet that acts as a natural antibiotic and that it makes the planet inhabitants live longer than normal humans. The chemical looks promising in treating the Drakh plague. There have all sort of problems with the natives, who seem not to want them to simply take what they want however they want to.
04_Daniels

Gideon and Galen go down to the planet. They are dressed as natives and they go into a bar. When Gideon speaks to the barmaid, her father tells him to leave her alone. They hang out until the bat is empty. Galen tells Gideon that they are waiting for something to happen. Gideon asks how he knows it will. Galen answers, “Something always happens.”
04_Somethng always happens

The townsmen come in and threaten them, telling them to get out of town. As things begin to look dicey, the lights do funny things and the door opens. An old man comes in and tells the townsmen that these men work for him. He takes them back to his home and offers them soup. He is Alwyn, he’s a technomage, and he asks how Galen knew it was him. Galen says it was the golden dragon, Alwyn’s trademark. Gale and Alwyn speak of the order and of having left it or it leaving them, as it were.
04_Alwyn

Gideon asks why he is pestering the miners and EF military. Alwyn takes them to a giant pit where fertile fields used to be, where the water is. Gideon asks if they can’t move, but Alwyn tells him there is nowhere else to go. He has tried to reason with Capt. Daniels to no avail so he decided to make it more trouble than it was worth. Alwyn says that one day, things will get violent and that if the soldiers “come with guns, they will leave in boxes.”

A group of the settlers take over the mine and take some of the workers hostage, saying that they do not leave, they will kill them.

As Galen and Alwyn talk of their past, Gideon comes in and reports the hostage taking.

In the meantime, Capt Daniels is sending a team down led by Lt. Meyers, who is confident he can take over and fix it(once they get there, anyway). He figures out that the dragon is a hologram and they fly through it. Gideon pleads with Alwyn not to do anything. Alwyn ignores him and when the soldiers come into take over the bar, he sends a group of holodemons that hit and bite the soldiers.
04_holodemon

Lt. Meyers contacts his ship and tells the Capt. That he has been captured. The leader of the settlers says they can beat EF, that they don’t have to be reasonable as long as they have Alwyn.

The Barkeep’s daughter falls unconscious. Alwyn examines her and says she is dying from too much of the chemical that is being mined… that the mining is releasing it in high enough quantities to poison the inhabitants. The barman says they must take a life for a life.

Alwayn goes to talk to them, telling them he is ashamed of them – that choosing violence is what those who came before them sought to escape by coming here. He tells them they have given him no choice but to fix it himself.

Daniels says they will not shut down. Gideon tells him that the technomage is going to use the open mine face as a broadcaster to strengthen his magic and he is going to use it to blow the EF ship up. Gideon says he can shoot the mine from his ship and stop it and he does, turning the mine into glass. And Alwyn too.
04_conjuring

The miners and EarthForce agree to move the mine and the settlers agree to help them find a better place for it. The barman’s daughter comes back from Gideon’s ship, cured.

We see Galen waiting for Alwyn, knowing it was all another illusion. Alwyn says he knew he had to leave when one of the settlers said they didn’t need to be reasonable, they had Alwyn. He asks Galen if he’d lie to take over. Galen says he already has a home.

He says this story someday become a legend… and that ‘The Long Road’ beckons.

*Alwyn was played by Peter Woodward’s farther, Edward.

Questions:
1. Did you think technomage when you saw the dragon the first time?
2. What did you think of the EarthForce attitude?
3. Did you believe that Alwyn had sacrificed himself?
4. Galen was mentored by Elric. Do you remember him from Babylon 5 (The Geometry of Shadows)?
5. Alwyn mentions the coming darkness. Any ideas?

Recap and discussion for Crusade 1 x 3 - The Memory of War

Recap and discussion for Crusade 1 x 3 – The Memory of War

Our episode begins with Matthew watching a newscast on ISN. The same newscaster we remember from Babylon, looking quite a bit older, mentions that 4 months have passed since the Drakh dropped the plague on Earth and things are not going well. There are riots, economic woes and the Pope (A woman, Bernadette II) is calling fo0r a worldwide day of prayer and fasting.

Matheson tells him that they have arrived at the planet. Gideon tells him to send probes down to the planet. The probes indicate no life signs but that the buildings are intact so this could mean that a plague wiped them out.

Galen pops up, telling Gideon NOT to go down to the planet, that it is dangerous and odds are, some of the crew won’t return.
03_Galen
And this little gem:
Clear me for docking. Put away the breakable, turn on the landing lights. I’m coming in.

Dr. Chambers is telling Gideon and the others that the life on the planet seemed to be similar to humans. Max says many of the buildings are still intact. Galen arrives, says that technomages are forbidden to come to this planet because it is known as a bad, diseased, dangerous place. Gideon says they will go anyway.

Max’s IPX underlings tell him that they will stay on the ship in case something happens to him, and he informs them that they have to go because he is the most important part of the IPX presence here.

Gideon gives Matheson a copy of his logs and some instruction if he doesn’t return.

Galen mentions all the ‘dead’ places they’ve been: "Have you wondered why there are so many dead worlds out there? Let me tell you why. It’s because despite the best advice of people who know what they are talking about, other people insist on doing the most massively stupid things."

Galen says he doesn’t know what is down on the planet but since he is no longer part of the technomage family, he has made Matthew and the crew his family and he doesn’t want them hurt. He said one technomage went there long ago and the only word they ever received from him was “genius Loci” which means “the spirit of the place”.

Galen watches as the shuttles go to the planet.

They take a heavy military presence with them and walk around, armed and looking about. Gideon sets up a perimeter, gives max a room and then finds Dureena has already disappeared. We see her high up on some buildings looking at the two suns set. She finds a mechanism that activates a bridge to some buildings across the way, she crosses over and grabs a data crystal, which makes the control mechanism start to blink as does the bridge so she runs to get across and has to jump the last few feet to make it.
She brings the data crystal back to Max, who confidently says he can decode it in no time.
03_Dureena

Some soldiers are talking and one says he hears things and see some odd writing in chalk.

Max decodes the crystal and a native from the planet says that millions are already dead and he doesn’t know what is wrong and that by tomorrow, they will all be dead. He speaks of the death that glides out of the darkness and cannot be stopped.

A woman screams. It’s Max’s IPX colleague and the other one says something attacked her out of the shadows. She is dead. There are more soon and Max decodes the chalk writing as saying “Behold and die.” Gideon asks for a shuttle to load the bodies for Dr. Chambers to autopsy.

While she is working on the bodies, Galen shows up. She is angry that he refused to go down to the planet with Gideon. She tells him that he seems to bring death with him and that the crew calls him ‘the spectre at the banquet’. All were murdered, one way or another. He interfaces with one of the still live probes and notices that the solar energy of the twin sun interferes with the probe and suddenly he knows… it is a nanovirus that is causing the crew members to kill one another. Everyone who goes down to the planet gets infected. The binary suns’ solar energy keeps it from working in the daylight so it makes people kill one another at night.

When Sarah enlarges the nanovirus, there is a sigil, a signature of sorts of the technomage who made it. Galen decides he must go down to the planet to face this rogue technomage. Galen tells Gideon what he is about to do and he finds the opening to where the technomage has his machine to control the nanites. The technomage is long dead b ut his consciousness has been loaded into an AI, the Genius Loci, as it were. He was hired by one faction to kill the other and the nanovirus was his weapon. He had been dormant but now he is awake and wants to kill more.
03_death

IN the meantime, it is nearing sundown when the virus becomes active, so Gideon tells Max (and all the others) to lock themselves in their rooms and he goes to find Galen.

When Galen gets ready to throw his staff at the machine, Dureena steps out and throws her knife at him, hitting him in the shoulder. Gideon comes up behind him with his gun. He tells Galen to step out of the way and he shoots the bridge between them and Dureena, she jumps just before Galen throws his staff into the machine. The three run for the surface as the machine blows up.
03_Kaboom

Back on the ship, Dr. Chambers is trying to work on Galen’s shoulder wound, but he will not remove his shirt. She tells him there is nothing she hasn’t seen before but when he finally does remove it, we and the doctor see the tech down his back. She stares but doesn’t comment.
03_tech

Gideon shows up and Galen tells him how he is upset over the loss of his staff… that is the control mechanism and is the only thing he could use to unmake something made by another technomage. About that time, a filthy Dureena shows up with the staff and hands it to him.
03_staff

Dr. Chambers tells Gideon about the nanites and ‘buckets of the stuff’ she has and how she’s made an inhaler that will block someone from getting the virus for 48 hours. While it’s not a cure, it’s a start.
03_inhaler

As Galen flies away in his little ship, Gideon talks to the Apocalypse Box and it tells him not to trust Galen.

Questions:
1. What did you think of Galen’s back? Did you have any idea where it came from at the time?
2. Were you surprised at all the soldiers that went down to the planet?
3. Have you ever watched in this order before?
4. Do you think the nanites are the key to the sure? (I know we never find out but speculate).

Recapo and discussion for Crusade Episode 2 - The Needs of Earth

Recap and discussion for Crusade Episode 2 - The Needs of Earth (using JMS’ watching order)

This one is another of my favorites – I shiver when Sarah tells Gideon that science is science. It does not change from one planet to another because it deals with facts but the things that give hope to world are art, music, literature, the things that cannot be replaced once they are gone. And I cringe when Gideon is too thick to get that.

We begin the episode with the infamous alien porn video that Max has accidentally given to Gideon with some other information. It’s a rather cute scene.
02_maxs Porn

They meet with a Minbari Ranger. He tells them they have an ‘off the books’ mission for them – to rescue a fugitive from Marata 6, who has data crystals with all the knowledge of his planet and will sell them to the highest bidder. They hope there is something of use there. The man’s name is Natchok Var and the Marati have a price on his head. The Ranger tells them the mission is illegal and they can turn it down if they want to.

Max asks Gideon if he can have the data crystal back so he can get him a non-corrupted copy but Gideon declines his offer. He then tell the staff of their mission. Max says NO. They shouldn’t pursue this because they have an obligation to put the needs of Earth first. Gideon fiddles with the porn crustal while he tells Max that the legal thing is not always the moral thing.

The man they want is on Praxis 9. He has been f9und by bounty hunters and Gideon’s mission is to steal him before he can be sold back to the Marati. Praxis 9 has a toxic atmosphere and is a commercial planet, which mostly means it’s a den of scum and villainy. Gideon says he will go alone since it’s illegal and dangerous but Dureena says she knows the place so she will go as well. She says she know the access codes to get them in.

They suit up and a re dropped off about 6 miles from the dome. They walk and after some initial problems, Dureena get them in. Once in, Dureena needs a distraction to get to the back where she thinks the man is being kept. Gideon starts a fight. Dureena activates a Thieves Guild Logo thing on the wall and a member comes to her and tell her where to find Natchok Var. They free him but Dureena sees a group of slaves and she frees them as well, this blowing their cover.

They have to flee and they make it back to the ship just as a Mararti ship comes out of hyperspace. It communicates with the surface. Gideon tells John to jump ASAP. The Marati ship follows them. With a while fleet along as backup.

Meanwhile, Sarah is trying to treat Natchok Var’s minor injuries and such but he will not let go of the data crystals. She makes mention of him selling them to the highest bidder and he tells her that he is willing to give them away to the right people.

The Marati say they will come onboard to talk and send the First Counselor and his translator since Marati officials do not speak any language of their own for purity reasons. They tell Gideon that they want Natchok Var back, he is a traitor and a criminal. Gideon plays dumb and has the two put in the brig for their own protection, he says while he visits their guest.
02_Marati

He finds Var listening to Mozart with a sublime look on his face. Var asks if this is done by one of their own people. Gideon tells him yes, he was from Earth. Var is very impressed.
02_Natchok Var

He tells Gideon that he will go with the Marati but only after they make a copy of all the data crystals to keep. Gideon agrees and they turn him over to the First Counselor, who assures them he will get a fair trial. When they get ready to go, the First Counselor will not ride on ship with a traitor so they go on one ship and Var goes on a second one operated remotely.

Natchok Var gives Mattheson an odd smile as he gets on his ship. He does a quick scan but lets it go by

A few minutes later, John tells Gideon and just as they realize it was setup and Gideon is about to order a fighter escort, the Marati blow the little ship up.

Gideon asks what is on the crystals and Sarah tells him that it is the entire recorded output of his planet, music, stories, books etc… and a video of Natchok Var explaining that the government has destroyed all art, music and literature that does not glorify the state and that he has the last copy and he must save it at all costs so someday, his people will know their heritage again.

Sarah says the music and art are the thing hope is made of that Earth needs all the hope it can get.

Gideon, being the ass he is, thinks it’s all foolish and they need to find the cure.

Mattheson tells his diary about a Sunday School discussion they had about would they save Christ if they could, knowing what they now knew and they had voted noand he liked to think that is why hechose as he did… “How odd. To know everyone's heart but my own.”

Gideon asks Sarah for a copy of the music to listen to and stops by Dureena’s room. She finally tells him that her family sold her into slavery to pay a debt and that is why she let the slave go on Praxis 9, because no one helped her.

Gideon gives her the crystal and we assume the music hear at the end is some of the Marati music Natchok Var saved.

*

JMS, in the notes on the Lurker’s Guide, mentions the attack on the National Endowment for the Arts during this time as an example in our own day and time. The same is true now as the president want to cut all funds to National Public Radio and Public Television and wants the press muzzled so they can only say what makes him look good.

*
Tony Amendola played Natchok Var. He was also Master Bra’tac on another of my favorite Scifi shows – Stargate SG-1.

*

Questions:
1. Did you find the first scene to be an odd non sequitur to the rest of the episode or a funny interlude?
2. Did Max have an actual point or was he just playing devil’s advocate when he said they had to out the needs of earth first?
3. So did you see the nipple in the porn? The network said it was there but I didn’t see it. I also did not hear Eilerson say Godammit but TNT put a sexual content warning on this one.
4. Is Gideon right? Is the cure all that matters or is Sarah right? That hope is almost as important?
5. Plotholes? Post them if you have them.

Recap and discussion for Episode 1 - Racing the Night

Episode 1 – Racing the Night

I have to tell you that I LOVE the 13 episodes that we have of this series. It’s an entirely different series and its hero is more anti-hero, I expect, though we will never know for sure.

I have written many, many Crusade fictions, many of them smutty PWP but I have also done a few more detailed stories. You can find them here: http://www.ofelvesandmen.com/AlexCat/Menus/Babylon5.htm and here is my best one, I think: https://archiveofourown.org/works/1413751/chapters/2969197
I get to shamelessly promote myself since I’m doing all the recaps! ;)

We open with Gideon dreaming of how he came to be on the Excalibur, Sheridan had the ship built and chose him for the mission, to find a cure to the Drakh plague. A group of aliens is arguing with a General and Captain Matthew Gideon, saying they don’t want to give him passage trhough theuir space because they don’t want to Drakh plague. Finally they offer Gideon a terrible deal – they will allow him to fly anywhere for 4 years and if in that time, he has not found the cure, he will spend the last year shooting down any ships that try to escape Earth as the plague’s time comes near. Gideon takes the deal.
01_Gideon

He wakes and Dr. Sarah Chambers calls him on a comm and tells him to come to the planet.

He goes down to a dead planet where the crew is doing all sorts of excavating.

Unknown to Gideon, a crew member is accosted by an unseen foe and it cuts him down through the middle, killing him.

Max Eilerson, archeologist and linguistics expert, is translating some files. He tells Gideon he’s found formulas to cure disease, fuel ships, etc but that only the first part of the equations are there. Gideon tells him that they are there to find a cure, nothing more. Max says IPX (yes, that IPX) could make millions off this stuff.

Gideon tells him they don’t have time to worry about profits. Max says good business is good for everyone… and he doesn’t even look like a ferengi!

Dr. Chambers tells Gideon that she has found DNA from at least 30 races in her soil samples. Gideon wonders if the planet is a source of knowledge like the library of Alexandria and Sarah says it doesn’t fir or make sense. She wonders if the people died off, then where are their bones? She also asks Gideon where Galen is. Gideon says a technomage only appears when you want him least and need him most.

Sarah tells him Dureena has gone exploring.

She is crawling through a tunnel and she finds bones then she crawls farther until she sees a great device of some sort and caverns that go on and on. She calls Gideon but he tells her she needs to come right away, that someone has been killed.

Sarah is examining the body and says most of his organs have been removed.

The ship calls and John Matheson tells them they have detected some movement on the planet. Gideon rides a speeder type machine to distract the little ships while his people get away. Soon he is rescued by Galen in his little black ship.
)!_Galen

Galen. Gideon and John are talking about the ship, saying that the ships stopped movement when Gideon stopped flying. Galen suggests they are an automatic defense grid type thing.

Galen notes how the crewman died and goes to his ship for something.

Dureena is in the tube with Galen and he tells her again, it seems, that he will not teach her what he k knows. He tells her she cannot use it for revenge. “When you have reached the end of the road, then you can decide whether to go to the left or to the right, to fire or to water. If you make those decisions before you have even set foot upon the road, it will take you nowhere. Except to a bad end.”

Galen sends a humunculous down to the planet, though it seems more a replica of himself than a miniature. The humunculous attracts the attention of whatever took the crew member who died. It slices him open and takes him inside its ship to be processed. When it goes inside one of the buildings, we see a sea of ships from all over the galaxy. Galen says that the facility ois a lab to collect specimens for research.
01_Humunculous

Dureena finally tells them about the bodies she found and about the generator. Gideon has them scanned and they pick up billions of life signs – all in cryogenic stasis. A fleet of fighters come out of the planet and some sort of field holds the ship in stasis. They are being drawn out of their orbit and down toward the planet.

Gideon has the ship turned to face the planet and fires the main guns, destroying the gravity generator.

They are being scanned and a suddenly a hologram appears. It is an alien from the planet. He tells them that a thousand years ago, the shadows came and asked to put a base o the planet. When they refused, the shadows unleashed a plague on them. After they had not found a cure in 3 years, they put their people in stasis and appointed one keeper for every to wake and watch every two years. They set up a research facility to catch and dissect aliens for a cure. He tells Gideon that they will continue their research and will give him any info they glean if he will do the same.

Max says it’s a fair deal.

Gideon refuses the deal. And blows up all the planetary defenses, telling the man that they’ll share the cure and hold them accountable for what they’ve done.
01_Biggun

They leave.

We see them back on the ship.

Dureena and Galen talk and again he refuses to share his knowledge with her, but tell her there is always hope. ”There is always hope, only because that is the one thing no one has figured out how to kill. Yet.”

A Ranger gives them a list of places to check and asks Gideon where he got the intel for this planet, Gideon says he has his sources.

He goes into his room and takes the Apocalypse Box from his closet and tells it that it gave them a wrong lead. And asks where to next.

Quotes:
Max Eilerson: Nations rise and fall. Planets live and die. But corporations go on, through good times and bad, because it's all about profit.

Galen: In the end, it's all the story of Job, isn't it?
Gideon: Some days, it feels like our faith is being tested, same as his.
Galen: Where do you put your faith, Matthew? In science? Your luck? This ship?
Gideon: I haven't decided.
Galen: Well, then, if this is the story of Job, a great deal of people are being inconvenienced for your benefit. Hope you appreciate it.

Expect me when you see me. Galen, borrowed from Gandalf, and also used by G’kar.

Discussion:
The lead in was:
"Who Are You?
Matthew Gideon, Captain. Attached to the Earth Alliance Starship Excalibur.
What do you want?
To find a cure to the Drakh plague before it wipes out all life on earth.
Where Are You Going? Anywhere I Have To.
Who do you serve and who do you trust?
Who do you serve and who do you trust?"

– Galen Questioning Captain Gideon

And this was the underlying theme of the show interspersed with moral dilemmas. I liked it. A lot. While this was JMS’ pick for the first episode, this is not how TNT chose to show them. The show has only 13 episodes though several more were scripted and a couple of those have been published somewhere. I think that the entire series would have been great – the search for the cure was not the real theme, according to JMS, but we’ll never know all the details for sure.

1. What did you think of the characters? Fave so far?
2. Matthew never answered the question proposed to him by the alien on the dead planet that he would do the same thing, given time running out on his planet. What would you do?
3. Why did Sheridan choose Gideon?
4. Galen – love him or hate him?
5. Max – love him or hate him?
