Recap and Discussion of 3 x 18 - Walkabout
Recap and Discussion of 3 x 18 – Walkabout
This is probably no one’s favorite episode. There is not any real reason for the romance. I am not a detractor of Dr. Franklin, though. I actually like him and his stubborn idealism. I just preferred the bromance he had with Marcus in later eps.
We open with Londo raising hell with Garibaldi about the Narn heavy cruiser that has just arrived at Babylon 5. Garibaldi basically tells him to blow it out his ear.
Lyta comes into Medlab, asking after Kosh. Dr. Hobbs tells her that Dr. Franklin has taken a personal leave and that Kosh was most certainly dead when they got to him.
Ivanova tells Garibaldi that the captain has called a meeting of the war council and that the new Vorlon ambassador is about to arrive. Garibaldi reluctantly tells her that Sheridan is outside, walking around. We see the Vorlon ship come out of a jumpgate and rise up to where Sheridan is standing. It appears to have a message on its side but JMS assures us it is meaningless.
G’kar meets with Na’Kal, the captain of the warship. He says they have about 10 ships left but are cobbling together more from parts. He mentions how good the breen is and we get G’kar’s famous Swedish meatball thing… You gotta love the little hint at conspiracy he throws out there. He tells Na’Kal that they must help defend B5 because “if Babylon 5 falls, we all fall.”
Sheridan and Ivanova wait for the Vorlon and they chatter away at him and he seems indifferent. We do find out that they will keep Kosh’s death a secret at the request pf the Vorlons. When they ask him his name, he says we are all Kosh and gets no friendlier or forthcoming.
Garibaldi finds Stephen and asks him what he is doing. Stephen explains the concept of the Walkabout and says he is on a journey to find hid real self. Garibaldi thinks he’s silly but there is little he can do.
The new Vorlon sees where Kosh died and then Lyta comes to him. He appears to torture her a bit as she explains that she carried none of Kosh and was on a mission he sent her on. The new Kosh is a bit of an ass.
John asks to talk to Lyta and asks her about the new Vorlon. She tells him it has been a very long time since one of them died and they are taking it hard. While John is chattering away, she hears Kosh speak but it was John.
He tells he her wants her to do something.
Garibaldi visits G’kar and reads him the riot act about helping Sheridan when he asks.
We then go to the plot part that annoys me. Stephen goes to a bar and listens to a woman sing.
The meeting of the War Council – Sheridan says they’ve found a weakness and he wants to take Lyta out, find a Shadow ship and test it. Ivanova is concerned what they’ll do against the Shadow ship and John asks for some of the others to go with him. Delenn volunteers the Minbari but G’kar demurs.
Cailyn comes to Stephen’s table and they talk.
G’kar asks Na’Kal but he feels it is a fool’s mission.
Sheridan, Lyta and his skeleton crew head out to Sector 90x10x47, where there have been 3 Shadow attacks in the last week.
Back to Stephen – he goes home with the woman and tells her she can do better. He asks if there’s anything he can do and she asks for some apinkillers. He rebukes her for drinking too much and tells her no.
Meanwhile Sheridan asks Lyta if she’s nervous and she asks him how he found out Kosh died. He told her he just did. They pick up a distress call and know the Shadows are there. They go in to the Shadows attacking all over.
Lyta says she needs to be in line of sight. She tries and is too weak to keep it up. John touches her and she sees him reacting to Kosh’s death and she gets angry and does focus, bringing the Shadow ship to a halt. Lennier says if they’ll have to take the jump engines offline to kill the Shadow, which means they’ll be dead in the water for a bit. Sheridan gives the order.
Cailyn gets up, dresses, takes something from Stephen’s pack and leaves while he sleeps.
Lyta is exhausted and tells Sheridan that she thinks they got off a distress call. In a few seconds, four more Shadow ships emerge from hyperspace. They use the three telepaths on the Minbari ship to control three of them but Lyta is too weak to control the 4th. They run and just before the Shadows destroy them, G’kar comes through a jump gate and he and B5 kill the 4th ship. A whole host of alien ships come through and the Shadows escape.
Stephen awakens to find Cailyn passed out on the floor and he finds the drug vial beside her. He calls for help and naturally assumes she is a junkie.
She is in Medlab and Stephen is talking to Dr. Hobbs, who says she is giving her the same pain med. Stephen objects. Dr. Hobbs tells him that Cailyn has terminal neuro-paralysis and she was treated by his predecessor. She says he has about 6 months left.
He talks to Cailyn, who tells him she wants to stay on B5 and sing as long as she can because her music gives people hope. He tells Dr. Hobbs to make sure she has whatever treatment she needs for as long as she needs it.
Lyta tells the new Vorlon that she might know who carries a piece of Kosh.
The show ends with Stephen listening to Cailyn sing.

Quotes:
G’kar, on Swedish neatballs: It's an Earth food. They are called Swedish meatballs. It's a strange thing, but every sentient race has its own version of these Swedish meatballs! I suspect it's one of those great universal mysteries which will either never be explained, or which would drive you mad if you ever learned the truth.
An exchange between Londo and Garibaldi:
Londo: And what guarantee will you give me that the cruiser will not open fire on a Centauri vessel as it approaches Babylon 5, hmmm?
Garibaldi: The same guarantee I gave you when I said that none of the other Narns would break into your room in the middle of the night and slit your throat.
Londo: Mr. Garibaldi, you have never given me that promise.
Garibaldi: You're right. Sleep tight.

Questions:
1. Did the one night stand serve any real purpose?
2. G’kar says “If Babylon 5 falls, we all fall.” Do you think this is true? Why?
3. Did you notice that the Minbari telepaths did not seem to need line of sight to interfere with the Shadow ships? Are they stronger than human telepaths?
4. What do you think of the new “Kosh”?
5. Do you think G’kar actively rallied the other ships to join him or do you think joined simply because changed their minds when he did?
6. JMS wrote Cailyn’s songs. What did you think?
7. Why did they let the Shadows escape?
