Well, my friends, he did it... we all knew he would and this brings us to the end of Season 3. I give you Z'ha'dum.

Recap and discussion of 3 x 22 – Z’ha’dum

We open with some looking back… to Anna, to the Icaris going to Z’ha’dum then we hear Delenn explain the three nights of watching that the woman does and we see Delenn watching him sleep. We see her pick up a snowglobe and Anna Sheridan walks in and introduces herself.

John asks her what she is doing there and she says all will be explained if he will come back with her to Z’ha’dum.

G’kar shows Ivanova a bunch of thermal mines that they have to defend the station with.

Franklin is running tests and says she is Anna. He has found some scarring on the nape of her neck.

John angrily confronts Delenn, telling her he cannot trust her since she must have known that Anna might be alive. She tries to explain that she does not think the thing that is Anna, is truly his Anna. She says she assumed Anna would rather die than become a servant of the Shadows and that she could not let him go to Z’ha’dum. She tells him she loves him.

Londo is drinking heavily when Vir asks him what is the matter. He says he has been offered a position as advisor on planetary security but he knows it’s a trap to keep him where he can be watched carefully. A man comes up and tells Londo to leave the station if he values his life.

Stephen finds that Anna’s scars are the same as those of Carolyn Sanderson.

Anna is with John. She is still pressing him to go to Z’ha’dum with her. He says he won’t go until she tells him what happened with the Icarus. She says when the vessel was discovered on Mars, they’d planted a homing device on it and Dr. Chang was following it to Z’ha’dum. She said the crew was killed in an accident and that there is tech there that would give Earth endless energy and cure disease, etc.

John sees the scans from Stephen.

Garibaldi comes to see Sheridan. He gives Mr. G. a list of things to do. Garibaldi realizes what he’s up to. John says he can’t tell anyone and when things are done, they can talk of the weather. As he is packing, we hear Kosh say inside his head, “If you go to Z’ha’dum, you will die.”

Michael gets everything ready. He mentions the weather to John.

John makes a video for Delenn.

He and Anna leave for Z’ha’dum. She tells him the Vorlon tech on his White Star will kill the ‘aliens’. He tells her they will go down to the planet in a shuttle, leaving the ship in orbit.

Franklin tells Ivanova that John is gone and that he has found a problem with Anna.

Anna introduces John to the ‘middle man’ – Justin. He babbles some silly BS.

Delenn looks at the message: He said he went to stop the Shadows and to maybe change the future in regards to Londo that he saw on B4. He says he wants to stay alive but that he knows it’s a trap.

Justin talks about the 2 races who stayed when the first ones left: the Shadows and the Vorlons. He said they stayed to help the younger races. The Vorlons were the Lords of Order while the shadows believed that growth came through conflict and chaos. In other words, the Shadows believe in weeding out the weak.

Shadow ships come out of hyperspace all around Babylon 5. Ivanova scrambles fighters, but tells them not to fire yet.

Morden speaks about evolving through conflict and talks about the Vorlons manipulating the younger races to their own ends. Anna says they must get all the races to fight, not to unify as John has done with them.

John says Anna is not his Anna. Justin said Anna chose badly and was used in a ship. A shadow slips in the door behind John. Even though they made him give up his weapons, he slipped a gun in anyway. He shoots the shadow.

Susan asks G’kar about using the mines and he tells her that 2 of them are missing.

John is crawling away, bloodied but alive. He hits a button that arms the White Star. Anna comes out and asks him to come back inside.

On the video message to Delenn, John tells her he loves her. She begins to cry.

Kosh tell John to jump. He does just as the White Star comes down through the sky light. Anna screams a shadow scream.

The shadows leave Babylon but not before capturing Mr. Garibaldi.

G’kar says there is a pause in the war and the universe is holding its breath.

Quotes:

G’kar’s monologue:

“It was the end of the Earth Year 2260, and the war had paused, suddenly, and unexpectedly. All around us it was as if the universe was holding its breath, waiting. All of life can be broken down into moments of transition or moments of revelation. This had the feeling of both. G’Quan wrote, ‘There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way.’ The war we fight is not against powers or principalities. It is against chaos. And despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope. The death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future. Or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born… in pain.”

Questions:

1. Were you surprised when you first saw it? Were you expecting a plot device miracle?
2. Did you notice how much the Shadow agent sent to Londo sounded like Sebastian? I did and it creeped me out.
3. Did you think the John/Delenn courtship was suddenly too fast? They kiss and now she’s doing the ritual 3 night watch?
4. Did Susan feel the explosion at Z’ha’dum? Or just guess?
5. Why was John the nexus? Destiny? Had the Vorlons done it? The Great Machine? Chance?

It's interesting that "Z'ha'dum" provided a perspective of the Vorlons-Shadows conflict from the latter's point-of-view. Yet, did any episode ever really provided the Vorlons' point-of-view? I can't recall.

"Into the Fire", maybe? Although it did give an equal POV to the Shadows as well.

Were you surprised when you first saw it? Were you expecting a plot device miracle?

I was spoiled that Sheridan was going to survive, so I wasn't as shocked as I could have been, but I do remember being too keyed up to sleep properly after the episode - not such a good thing, considering that my high school final exams started the next day :D

Did Susan feel the explosion at Z’ha’dum?

I think she subconsciously picked up some telepathic messages that the shadow vessels were sending each other about what had happened.
