Rewatch 1 x 19 – A Voice in the Wilderness, part 2

And we pick up with an EAS ship named the Hyperion coming through the jump gate, and it’s a busy episode the rest of the way through.

You can read the recap at Dreamwidth and Livejournal and see JMS’ notes here.

I forgot to mention Garibaldi hunting his old flame once Mars breaks out in rebellion. He hunts and gets his heart dashed! The rebellion is put down as well, but we know how that turns out, don’t we?

The old dude appeared to 3 people, Sinclair, Londo and Draal. Draal is a pretty cool old dude and seems very happy to take over the working of the machine (That really does nothing much after this).

There was foreshadowing but not enough for me. There were a lot of red herrings and false starts with ideas that would have been great but sort of never came up again – like Jason Ironheart. Then there was some that hit the mail on the head – Delenn says Sinclair has another destiny.

Funny, goofy Londo breaks my heart because I know what is in store for him. He made bad choices and great sacrifices, but he never got a break. Not a one!

OH I forgot to mention the nasty aliens who came for the planet – guess it showed them, didn’t it?

OH and Ivanova says BOOM again!

So what do you think?

I am very sorry it's late... I actually meant to get it posted both days and time slipped away.

Rewatch 1 x 18 – A Voice in the Wilderness, part 1

The DReamwidth Recap and the Livejournal Mirror.

JMS has LOTS to say about this one!.

This one and the next one were a great beginning to something that never happened!

There was a lot of stuff stuffed into this episode and the next one.

Humor – Garibaldi’s tube omniscience concerning Talia! Londo is funny as hell in this one – he sings the Hokey Pokey! (And yes, that really is what it’s all about!) Also his mathematics and Narn thing.

Then we get suspense – what’s happening on Mars? Is Garibaldi’s ex safe? What’s inside Epsilon III and why is Draal going to the sea like Tolkien’s elves?

Then there is Ivanova’s ‘Ivanova is god’ speech!

And then there’s an old man in the machine!

The thing is we have this wonderful machine and story and they sort of drop it. We see it now and again but nothing as wonderful as it should be!

And then we have ‘to be continued’!

Favorite part? Questions? Anything?

The recap this week will come tomorrow as I am not feeling well today. It’s almost finished, just can’t keep my eyes open. So here’s some discussive bits to go on with this evening.

There are so many set-ups in these two episodes, some of which fizzle, some of which reappear and disappear, and some of which pay off later.

It was mentioned in a comment that a good work of art changes with time—that is, as we change, our concept and understanding of art changes with us. Also I have found that aspects of a show that are less important to me become more so, and those that held me fixed in the past, fade in fascination on re-viewing.

This time through I am riveted by Londo and Sinclair, although they have few, if any, scenes together. The choice presented to them, along with Draal, form the crux of the story. Sinclair’s choice this time is subverted by Delenn, who will prove to have a habit of doing that, and it will come to bite her in the end. Londo, well, there is so much pathos and foretelling it’s painful to watch. And also joyful.

‘One of us, will not return.’

‘That much is certain.’

A Noble Londo

‘As a young and foolish Centauri, I swore I would die on my feet, doing something noble and brave and futile. Perhaps it was not so wild a dream as I thought. Or as foolish. It is better than waiting for the inevitable.’

Delenn gives him such a look at this speech. She likes him like this. She sees the good in him.

‘All my life I have searched for a way to serve others. To me there is no higher calling, no greater destiny, than to live for another, and if necessary, to die for another. To somehow make the world a better place.’

Are you listening, Delenn? There will a test.

Delenn tells Garibaldi that Sinclair is looking for a purpose, and that he would have taken Varn’s place. ‘But his destiny lies elsewhere.’

Some things are better left buried. Garibaldi may be right about this.

So if the third principle of sentient life is self-sacrifice, what are the first and second principles?
