Recap and Discussion of 4 x 17 – The Face of the Enemy
Where we see LOTS of enemies:
Garibaldi, Edgars, Bester,
Sheridan, Young Capt Frank
All are enemies to someone…
Ivanova opens by mentioning that the battles have become more desperate as they come closer to home. She says the hard part is in fighting their own.
Franklin and Lyta arrive on Mars with their cargo.
Sheridan says it’s the endgame and they’ll be okay if nothing goes wrong.
Edgars calls for Garibaldi, telling him that Sheridan’s father is in custody and he is to contact Sheridan when everything is ready. Edgars says it’s for Sheridan’s own good, everyone’s own good, since once Sheridan is out of the picture, they can take care of Clark and the Psi Corps. When Edgars says Sheridan might even thank him, Garibaldi says he doubts that.
Edgars says the whole truth can come out in only a few days – that not many men can say that. Garibaldi says "I think the last guy got thirty pieces of silver for the same job.”
Earthships are still fighting despite being outgunned. Sheridan contacts one asks why. Capt. Frank replies that they know he is executing the crews of the ships who surrender and replacing them with Minbari crews. Sheridan’s friend, MacDougan tell the young captain that it’s not true. He says that he and his entire crew have joined Sheridan. The young captain surrenders.
The Agamemnon comes through a jump point. They tell Sheridan that they’ve been looking for him, He goes over to talk.
Franklin and Lyta meet No. 1, who gives them a less than warm reception after she finds out that Lyta is a telepath.
John comes aboard the Agamemnon and they seem very happy to see him. Marcus contacts him with a message from Garibaldi. Garibaldi tells John that Clark has his father and he has a way for Sheridan to get him back. John falls for it and the Agamemnon takes him to Mars. Ivanova tries to talk him out of it to no avail.
No. 1 is still being an ass… Lyta says it’s because the cops are using Psi Corps Bloodhound units to scan for resistance fighters… what this has to do with Lyta, I’m not sure since LYTA ALREADY WORKED WITH THEM AS A TELEPATH BEFORE! Lyta tells Franklin some more stuff about how awful Psi Corps really is - blah, blah, blah. No.1 comes in and tells them she had a message from Sheridan and they’re on their own for a while.
Delenn and Lennier arrive on B5 as Susan is leaving to take over Sheirdan’s forces. Delenn promises to keep an eye on B5.
Sheridan goes to Mars, meets Garibaldi and is taken into custody. He does not go gently.
Ivanova arrives on Sheridan’s ship in time to see ISN’s broadcast about the capture of Sheridan and how well he’s being treated… as we see him being kicked and beaten.
When Garibaldi gets back to Edgars’ home, he demands to know the rest of the story. Basically, Edgars has an antidote to the telepath virus, which he also has, and plans to control telepaths by giving them all the virus then using the antidote to force them into slavery. He says the human race must protect itself from a superior race of humans and that they are using Clark to gain power.
He says that they will start moving the virus and in about 3 weeks, the telepath problem will be over. After he leaves for bed, wade tells Garibaldi now that he knows, he will not be allowed off the compound.
Lise was listening to the whole thing.
After he is alone, Garibaldi removes a tooth and we see a tiny transmitter.
Next thing we see, he’s on the train. Lise asks him to help her and he tells her to go home. A few seconds later, Bester comes in and sits down and Garibaldi makes his report. Them bester blahs, blahs about they only needed to push him in the right direction to get him to spy on Edgars and all the rest. He finally decides to make him remember everything and when he leaves and Michael remembers, he screams.
After Ivanova is told that Garibaldi contacted B5, she says if he’s seen on the station, she wants him shot on sight.
Garibaldi goes to Edgars’ house and he is dead. Wade tells him Lise was not there and dies. The house is trashed to make it look as if the resistance broke in.
ISN identifies Garibaldi as the one who turned in Sheridan and names him a hero of the people.

Another episode I hated. We find out that Garibadli really is mostly a paranoid asshole, if you’ll pardon my language. While he may have some valid points, we never do see any real indication that Sheridan plans to set himself up as dictator of Earth. The worst thing he can be accused of is being single-minded and not having a plan for after he has unseated Clark. WE know he does not plan on setting up military rule on Earth but how can the people of Earth know that?
But Garibaldi knows him! Brainwashing or not, Garibaldi knows him. Bester’s trap was for Edgars so I’m not sure the vendetta against Sheridan can be laid off on Bester.

Quotes:
"I think the last guy got thirty pieces of silver for the same job.”

Questions
1. Was his programming responsible for what he did to Sheridan?
2. Was this needed also to keep Clark in power so the Psi Corps could keep their advantage in EathGov? Or was it just a happy coincidence that Garibaldi betrayed Sheridan?
3. Was Clark patterned after Hitler and the Fascists? Or was Edgars?
4. How much did denial have to do with Lise not knowing what was happening?
