Recap and discussion for 5 x 7 – Secrets of the Soul
Again we have more Byron. Blech.
The episode opens with Franklin talking about cataloguing the medical histories of alien members of the Alliance. He is examining a Pak’ma’ra and finds out that they eat almost everything but fish.
A new group of telepaths have arrived on the station and Zack is not happy about it. Byron shows up and tells them Peter is very special and we see that he is – he’s telekinetic. Zack tells Lyta that there is more going on with Byron than they know and Lyta tells him that Byron has made her feel like a part of something and that she would follow him to hell. She says she has been used and risked her life for little more than nothing.
One of the station thugs picks on Byron and Byron allows him to hit him 3 times and tells him that his anger has nothing to do with telepaths.
Franklin is talking with the Hyach ambassador and tells her he’d like to access their medical records. Another Hyach says those things are secret and she asks if Franklin would die to keep their records secret. He assures her they will be secure and the ambassador says they will send them soon. After Franklin leaves, the other Hyach tells the ambassador that Franklin will die if he betrays them.

Lyta goes to Byron to care for his wounds and asks him why he allowed this to happen. He tells her violence is not their way. He tells her there is so much more to her than meets the eye. They kiss. Byron asks his followers to make her feel like one of them.
The Hyach give Franklin the records and he asked why they are a 7000 year old civilization but their records only begin 800 years ago. She tells him that is all there is. After she goes, Franklin asks the computer to0 check records and it finds nothing either.
Peter get separated from the other teeps and the thugs from before beat him very badly. Franklin tells them he will be okay.
Byron and Lyta hurry to find the other teeps, who are torturing one of the bullies. He passes out and Byron makes them stop then bends down to help the hurt man. Zack arrests Byron and won’t listen to Lyta.
Franklin asks the computer to search for mentions of the Hyach in other alien histories.
Byron asks Zack to let him calm his people but Zack refuses. The teeps or a teep are beating the bully who started it all.
Franklin finds a reference to a race called the Hyach-doh. He is then taken at gunpoint by the assistant(?) to the ambassador. He tells them that he knows about the Hyach-doh. The Hyach-doh were a sentient race that developed at the same time as the Hyach and they had blended and intermarried until they began to0 worry about it and eventually, the Hyach killed all of the Hyach-doh, over 40 million of them.
The ambassador tells him that the reason their population is dying is because there was something in the blend o0f their genes that kept them viable but that they had been decreasing ever since they’d killed all the Hyach-doh and soon would become extinct as a result. Franklin says he cannot forgive them in the place of the dead but if they stop hiding it, he and others can work on a way to help them.
Zack lets Byron go even though the thug from last night was killed. Byron tells him he could have stopped it from happening. Lyta goes home with him and they kiss and decide to have sex. She tells him she has been changed by the Vorlons and doesn’t k know what it will do to him. We see her in a tank of fluid along with babies form many races… the Vorlons made Teeps, it appears. All the teeps wake and watch them. (YUCK)

Byron decides that the Alliance owes them a homeworld since the Vorlons made them and are gone. He says they will make them gi9ve is a homeworld.

Quotes:
Lyta Alexander: Byron, the Vorlons changed me. More than you could possibly know. I don't know what it'll do once you get past my barriers and I get past yours. It could burn you.
Byron: Then let it burn.
[After they make love, Lyta's barriers go down, and they both witness the full measure of what the Vorlons did: not only to her, but to all telepaths. They meet with the rest of Byron's people.]
Byron: It was the Vorlons.
Lyta: Yes.
Byron: They created telepaths on a hundred worlds. Interfered with their genetic development. Took people from their homeworlds and adjusted them over the course of the centuries.
Lyta: Yes.
Byron: Because they needed telepaths in their war against the Shadows. Needed us as cannon fodder.
Lyta: Yes.
Byron: We would be normal. We would have lives. We would be able to walk and live and work among normals without fear of persecution if the Vorlons had not interfered with our normal development. We were made for their benefit, to save them. We were told that our abilities were our gift and our curse, and that we were somehow responsible for it. But we're not. We're not.

Questions:
1. This episode is probably my least favorite in this season and maybe the whole series. What do you all think?
2. Since the Hyach and the Hyach-doh extensively intermarried, doe sthis mean that all of those people were also exterminated? The reason I ask, is if they were mixed, wouldn’t that genetic mix save them?
3. Why exactly does the Alliance owe the telepaths a homeworld? How will Byron “make” them do it?
4. Did any of you find the sex scene as icky as I did?
5. Doesn’t Lyta seem a lot like she did with Kosh? All devoted and such?
