Midnight on the Firing Line
We skip being in the frying pan and jump directly into the fire in this first actual episode of Babylon 5.
A recap can be found Here on DW and Here on LJ.
We meet new characters from the pilot: Susan Ivanova, Talia Winters and Vir Cotto. Of the three, Vir was and will always be my favorite. He was so cute in the beginning and he grew so much through the series. He went from a screw up child to a man of honor, that while not perfect, did his best to do the right thing.
Ivanova got more human as time passed and less (but only a little) of a controlling bitch She comes into her own later, I think, when she throws in with Sheridan as the Voice of the Resistance.
And Talia was, unfortunately for me, an annoyance. I never liked anything about her. Even her voice annoyed me.
There was always something that bothered me about Ragesh 3 – though they never said otherwise, was it really simply an agricultural colony? We never know for sure… except that Londo does still have the clout to have his nephew stationed there to keep him safe.
Sinclair shows us that he can be creative with orders when he needs to be. I always liked the way he seemed to be more common man than officer material, but if he was a pilot in a long history of military pilots, then he’d have been a little less working class than he appears, I’d think. I think he’s more complicated than Sheridan ever was.
Kosh! I’ve forgotten what a tease it must have been on one’s first watch to see Kosh as a bit of light behind his screen. And I loved their exchange about Narn and Centauri –
Kosh: “They are alone. They are a dying people. We should let them pass.”
Cmdr Jeffrey Sinclair: “Who, the Narn or the Centauri?”
Kosh: “Yes.”
I think that was actually a main theme through the series, in one way or another.
We got history:
Sinclair’s military family
First contact was with the Centauri, who lied to us.
Through Ivanova, a simple rundown of telepaths and their choices.
And we meet Garibaldi’s second favorite thing!
I almost forgot raiders – there are always raiders in B5. I found it odd but very in character to have Commander Sinclair to lead the mission to stop the raiders. He won’t be the last one to do such a thing. Number One on STNG would have refused to let go out!
So what do YOU all think? Expand on the points here or bring up more, better ones to talk about. Also, if you’ve got any links to fics, vids, anything pertaining to this ep, please feel free to share those as well.
I’ll leave you with a photo of Vir and his crazy hair!
