Recap and Discussion for 3 x 12 – Sic Transit Vir

We begin the episode with Ivanova standing naked in the C&C then waking up screaming.

We see Vir on Centauri Prime – a minister of some sort tells him that the Emperor likes his reports from Minbar but they do sound a lot like Londo wrote them. Vir tells he helped. Then the minister tells Vir a joke: What is more dangerous than a room full of angry Narns? One angry Narn with a key. Vir laughs nervously and goes back to his room, which is full of angry looking Narns.

Susan tells John she’s been having nightmares. He tells her she must have something unsettled in her mind.

Londo is trying to kill a bug when finally a young woman comes in.

John and Delenn meet and he asks her for a date – rather awkwardly.

Vir arrives back on B5.

Vir goes to Londo’s quarters where he is introduced to Lyndisty, who is to be his wife.

Londo has another bug.

Zack tells Ivanova that someone from Centauri named Abrahamo Lincolni has been sending Narn offworld with false papers. They gape at one another when they see who has done this.

Vir is nervously getting to know Lyndisty.

Vir tries to explain to Ivanova why he is sending Narn to camps – they are safer than where they are and safer as well. He is running a sort of underground railroad.

John had made flarn for Delenn and judging by her expression, it’s awful but she’s saved by the bell when an attack is reported and John goes running.

A Narn has attacked Vir and Lyndisty, but is thwarted by Sheridan and the security team led by Zack. They end up shooting the Narn. Before he is killed the Narn says it is a Blood oath.

Ivanova reports the blood oath bit to Sheridan and they are all puzzled at why anyone would want to kill Vir, most of all Vir. Lyndisty fixed his injury. Ivanova tells him that the Narn had a pouch brother who will try to finish the blood oath.

Vir asks for romance advice from Susan who finally tells him to behave with enthusiasm, sincerity, compassion and humor.

Delenn is helping John with his buttons since he was injured in the scuffle with the narn who attacked Vir and Lyndisty. John almost kisses Delenn when Ivanova interrupts and calls him to Londo’s quarters. Susan calls Vir out about the camps in front of Londo, telling Sheridan about them all being dead. Londo is appalled as only Londo can be after he finds out that the Narn were sent away rather than killed.

Lyndisty helps Vir, tending his wounds. Lyndisty tells Vir what she really thinks of the Narn, that they are lesser and not even people. She has the other Narn tied up for Vir to kill. She says she has killed many with her father, helping to burn villages and to put Narn to sleep, as he culled the herds of Narn. Vir is appalled at her.

We cut away to Londo yelling at Vir about going native on Minbar and about how Lydisty is going home and postponing their wedding.

Susan shows John how she made an identity for Abrahamo Lincolni so they could continue to use it if need be.

Virt says goodbye to Lynduisty. She says she’ll wait for him.

Questions:
1. What did you think of the bug in Londo’s room? Did you hear the sound it made?
2. So was Vir inspecting the throne because of Lady Mirella’s prediction that he’d be emperor someday?
3. Do you think G’kar knows anything about what Vir is doing?
4. Lyndisty gave me the creeps… as a young child in the south, I heard older people talk about African Americans that way… not about killing them but that they were somehow lesser than white people were. It was not unusual to hear things like coming from lovely mouths. Comments?
5. The first you saw it, were you yelling ‘Kiss her!’ to John? Do you like silly, giddy John in love?

1. I am terrified of bugs! So this bit was hilarious, and yet hard for me to watch. Did it make a noise? ACK! I don't remember.

2. So was Vir inspecting the throne because of Lady Mirella’s prediction that he’d be emperor someday?

I think so? Or maybe just a bit awestruck?

3. Do you think G’kar knows anything about what Vir is doing?

G'kar always struck me as the sort who always knew what was going on. Or at least suspected.

4. Lyndisty totally creeped me out. The contrast between the sweet face/matter of fact attitude and the horrible reality of what she was doing was chilling.

5. The first you saw it, were you yelling ‘Kiss her!’ to John? Do you like silly, giddy John in love?

I call B5 the show that very nearly made me a shipper. I missed a lot of the schmoopy stuff the first time I watched the series. (Not during its original run, but about 7 years ago!)

This time, I SO yelled, "Kiss her!"

I love those two because it was a relationship that grew normally, over time. And it never overshadowed (uh, no pun intended) the rest of the show, or their bigger responsibilities. Saving the world always came first. And they each demonstrated time and again that they'd sacrifice for each other, even their own lives - but never at the expense of others.

I love them for that. I love each of them individually for that quality. And so, I love them together as well. It's how real love should be.

YES - to this day, I think John/Delenn is one of the best executed tv-romances ever.

I've never been a shipper in general. Just not my thing. This is the only show I can think of where I desperately WANTED to see a wedding! I spent all of S5 sort of subconsciously waiting/hoping. And then ... nothing!

I know! And then jms had the gall to laugh about it - he KNEW what we wanted and deliberately didn't give it to us!

Aw, he did? That's just cruel! I am glad I never watched this show in real time.

The funny thing is I normally would be on his side. I'm just not the schmoopy type in general. Normally, I wouldn't care, especially on a sci-fi show that had such a grand storyline and complicated plot. My standard would be to laugh right along with him!

It says a lot about the characters, the writing and these actors that they affected me this much.

ETA: In a way, I am glad. It would've been worse if they'd gone all soap opera/teen romance. One of the reasons I love the characters is because they were so restrained in their public demonstrations of love.

So while on the emotional level I want to shake my fist at JMS for tormenting us that way, I think he was right. I wouldn't have wanted them to be all sappy and over the top. That's not who they are.

Questions:
1. What did you think of the bug in Londo’s room? Did you hear the sound it made?

It was too big. I am growing used to Too Big Bugs now I am further south and back in apartment life. Maybe I should get a sword...

2. So was Vir inspecting the throne because of Lady Mirella’s prediction that he’d be emperor someday?

Oh yes. He certainly was. Checking it out big time.

3. Do you think G’kar knows anything about what Vir is doing?

I actually don't think so. G'Kar is not that evolved yet that he would consider a Centauri trying to help.

4. Lyndisty gave me the creeps… as a young child in the south, I heard older people talk about African Americans that way… not about killing them but that they were somehow lesser than white people were. It was not unusual to hear things like coming from lovely mouths. Comments?

Even more chilling this time around. I LIKED Lyndisty. I liked her with Vir! And I always hope it won't turn out the way it always does.

5. The first you saw it, were you yelling ‘Kiss her!’ to John? Do you like silly, giddy John in love?

Yes, I like silly, giddy John. And hovering, suggestive Delenn.

I don't think I yelled 'Kiss her!' As I recall I yelled 'SUSAN! NO!'

I only remember the John/Delenn parts of this episode, and the catchphrase, "That darn Ivanova!"

We were such young little 'shippers. It's fascinating to me how my memories are mostly about the J/D romance for these episodes rather than the rest.
