Nukes do seem outdated, especially considering they're facing races who can pretty much vaporise their opponents with a single beam but... But it worked, I guess. A bit like throwing pebbles at a tank to get the driver's attention.
I feel like there's a lot parallels with Tolkien but obvious references? My Tolkien-fu is too rusty to say.
BTW, this episode really made me want to reread Louise Cooper's Chaos Gate.
