Recap and discussion for Crusade – episode 5 – Visitors from Down the Street
The X-files Episode!
I always thought this one was rather cute. I am an X-files fan, of course.
It begins with Gideon and Matheson riding the tube. Gideon smells something no one else smells. He tells John he wants him to find it.
Gideon is called to the bridge when they pick up a distress signal. We see it. It’s a small flying saucer. They determine it’s a lifepod with two life signs aboard. It’s also a first contact situation. They bring the pod aboard and have to go inside to find the occupants.
The man, Durkani, tells them he will shoot. He comes out and demands to have their lifepod recharged and ready to go in an hour and they will be going back with proof. Matheson pulls aJedi telepath mindtrick and makes his gun look like a snake and he drops it. Crusade Security gets him and the man says they should have expected such treatment.

Matheson tells Gideon he can’t read their minds because of the telepath rules but he does pick up that they’re confused, frightened, determined and desperate.
We flash back to their home planet and Lyssa, the girl, is in an office, searching for something with her flashlight. She calls Durkani and tells him they’ve ransacked the office and burned everything. He tells her to meet him inn 30 minutes at the usual place and they’ll ‘out there’ to find the proof they need.
Gideon is watching them and drinking coffee. He says he misses the wind back home. ON leave, he’d go outside with his iced tea and sit and let the wind blow on him...
The aliens’ biology is very different from humans so they have no idea why they dress like humans and why they speak English.
Lyssa apologizes to Durkani for not believing in aliens.
Gideon goes in to talk to them. He tells them he doesn’t know what to do with them. Durkani says that there are secret files on the humans buried under the capitol on their planet.
Gideon assures them that Earth has not been watching them at all but they don’t believe him. Humans have been visiting for centuries, devastating parts of their world, ruining lives, and helping to create government agencies to conceal the facts from the public he has dedicated his life to exposing these conspiracies.
They argue back and forth with the alien not really believing Gideon. Durkani tells Lyssa that he thinks Gideon really doesn’t know but that he trusts no one.
Matheson has a man hunting the smell… he’s not found it yet.
The alien says their planet has not made space craft that can venture out of their own solar system, but about 200 years ago, the sightings started. He shows Gideon a photo of a blimp. Gideon is surprised, telling him he’s never even seen one except in books. The alien says his government claims they are swamp gas. He says one crashed that had humans on it – he shows Gideon a drawing of humans – and the government said it was a weather balloon. He pulls something out of a bag – says it’s a weapon or a recreational tool. It’s a golf club. He tells of crop circles and strange musical broadcasts. He says they sent a satellite to Earth and found something – it’s a photo of Mount Rushmore.

Gideon agrees that all these things are form his world but that they don’t prove interference.
Durkani says the girl only joined him a few years ago. He says a man broke into their office. He had a mask on and under it was a human mask then under that he was one of them. He says they realized they were in great danger so they stowed away on a ship and stole a life pod. (We see this as a flashback and we see an older man come to the door after they’ve gone.)
Gideon asks why would Earth do this?
Durkani says education cuts, clothing styles and even language are forced on us by the aliens. He asks Gideon to come to their world. Gideon says he’ll think about it.
Matheson tells Gideon that an unknown ship is approaching. They are being hailed in Enlgosh. The man is the same species as Lyssa and Durkani and he tells them he is Special Agent Kendarr. He has come for Lyssa and Durkani. He will return them home for execution.

They are riding the tube again, heading for wherever the other two are being held. Kendarr mentions the smell. Gideon asks why he is going to execute them but Kendarr gives him no real reason. Gideon says things don’t add up so he’s going to put them all together and let the truth fall out.
Durkani somehow has a weapon and takes Kendarr hostage. They escape into the tube tunnels. Gideon has them tracked and everyone is trying to find them and he wants to know how they got a weapon. Kendarr tells Gideon that the truth has never been in anyone’s best interest.
They find the aliens and the smell too. Gideon even finds a place with some wind.
He is sending them all home. He lets Durkani and Lyssa go then asks Kendarr why. Kendarr says that his planet was prone to civil wars and they decided to use some of the information they licked up from broadcasts to try to control that. They began to blame everything wrong on the aliens and soon the people did as well. They stopped fighting one another and they kept up the conspiracy to keep the peace. Durknai was paranoid so they fed him lots of info to keep the conspiracy going.
Kendarr pulls out a cigarette, lights it and thanks the captain.
After they are gone, he orders john to go to their planet and release probes near their cities with the Interstellar Encyclopedia and a recording of Kendarr’s comments. Gideon says he’s letting the truth back in the room.
In the end, he is sitting in front of one of the tubes – in a lawn chair with his iced tea and the wind blowing in his face.
