1. I know that JMS said Garibaldi was suicidal but did he really have reason to be? He’d been saved, his friends were all right, the station was still there and he was offered his job back. Was the betrayal of someone who’d obviously been a plant all along enough reason to shoot himself?
I believe Garibaldi was shaken to the core by the betrayal of his lieutenant. And by what he must have seen as the betrayal of his superior (Sinclair) who left without an explanation or saying good-bye. He had given up Lise to follow Sinclair who disappeared while he was teetering beteween life and death! He prides himself on his ability to ferret out secrets and discover things about people...and he missed a big secret here. I also think we're seeing the seeds of Garibaldi's eventual disenchantment with Sheridan and the war with Earth.
2. Do you think Ivanova’s solution to the Drazi problem was really a solution? Did anything really change? Was this part just a way to insert the insanity of blind patriotism into the plot? Or even blindly following past customs?
No. They will be back at it again. JMS always has a message and that might be it. I also think it was a sideways look at the upcoming Minbari reactions, to Delenn and to the advent of the Shadows as a threat. The past isn't always past, is it? And sometimes you need to step away from tradition.
3. What did you think of the bolder Vir?
Love Vir's path to discovering his own inner resources. His arc is the antithesis of Lennier's descent.
4. Do you think Sinclair would have sent Ivanova to deal with the Drazi?
Now, that's an interesting question! I don't think he would have...Sheridan seems to take mentoring and care of his staff very much more to heart than Sinclair. Perhaps it is the difference in rank.
5. Do you think Refa was offering Londo a large role in the new empire or was he just buttering him up to convince him to join them so they could share in his recent successes?
Buttering him up and trying to find out what force Londo has in reserve and probably whether he could co-opt it himself.
