Recap and discussion for Thirdspace
Thirdpsace must have not made much of an impression on me because I didn’t remember anything about it when I went to watch it for this rewatch (Yes, I do rewatch every episode).
It takes place in Season 4, between “Into the Fire” and “Moments of Transition”. The Shadow War is over but the war with Earth has no yet begun.
Ivanova and her crew are in space, setting traps for raiders. They catch one and while on their way back to Babylon 5, they find this huge artifact in hyperspace. They tow it back to Babylon 5. John is very excited about it since they know nothing about it. Delenn says his eyes light up like a child’s when he sees a mystery like this one. He is determined to find out what it is.
Meanwhile, Lyta begins having visions.
And people start acting strange and seeing a giant tower in a dark alien city.
Then a Dr. Elizabeth Trent from Interplanetary Expeditions shows up to find out what the thing is as well. She tells Sheridan that IPX operates outside government oversight. She knows things she shouldn’t, like Lyta’s enhancement by the Vorlons and even how she got to the Vorlon homeworld. Sheridan allows her to work if she will tell him what she finds and also bring food and supplies into Babylon 5.

The artifact begins to influence more and more people as they work on it more and more. Ivanova reveals they have found it’s over a million years old. Dr. Trent comes to believe it’s a device that will allow interstellar travel almost instantaneously. Her colleague, Bill Morishi, is more cautious, but finally agrees that they must explore it further and quickly before anyone else figures out what it will do.
Ivanova and Vir are in the same vision – Vir gives in to it and Ivanova fights it.

Violence breaks out all over. People are forming gangs and one man, Deuce, tries to walk out an airlock.
The artifact is also draining energy from the station and will destroy it in several hours when John and Delenn go see Lyta. She is standing in the middle of her quarters with her eyes glowing.

She says the Vorlons left a memory in her mind - she tells the tale of a million years ago, the Vorlons believed themselves to be so godlike that they built a jumpgate to access the ‘well of souls’ to contact the gods. What they found was a race of people in Thirdspace who believed that they were the ONLY worthy life in the universe and sought to destroy all other life. They were vanquished but a group of Vorlons, under the aliens’ telepathic influence, stole the artifact and hid it in hyperspace.
She tells John how to destroy it but we don’t know what that is until he removes a nuke that can be hand carried from B5 and while Ivanova distracts them, he goes through a hole in their shielding to place the nuke. It blows up and life returns to normal.

A few bullets:
• IPX also woke the Shadows on Za’ha’dum. Anna Sheridan worked for them as well as Max Eilerson in Crusade, who tells us much more about IPX and several other ‘companies’ out in space.
• Lyta mentions many more mistakes the Vorlons made…
• Sheridan tells us that he knows Dr. Trent is still lying to him.

Quotes:
"It was the middle of the Earth year 2261. The year between wars and the beginning of a new age. The Shadow War was over, but there was still a darkness waiting for us at home. President Santiago had been assassinated, and his successor, President Clark, was turning Earth into a prison camp. We'd broken away from Earth, and in retaliation, they quarantined us, trying to strangle our supply lines. We were desperate and we couldn't afford to lose even a single supply ship. In the midst of all of this, we made contact with Thirdspace, and we almost didn't survive it. I only hope we never come across it again . . . because next time, no one's going to survive it." - John Sheridan at the beginning in a voiceover.
Delenn: John, whenever something comes into our proximity that has to do with the unknown, your eyes light up like two tiny suns. And do you know what words these two tiny lights spell out?
Sheridan: What?
Delenn: Mine! Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine!
Sheridan: Oh, now that is a lie!
Delenn: Minbari do not lie.
Sheridan: Well then it is slander.
Delenn: To be slander, it must be false. That's two down.
Sheridan: Well then it's damned inconvenient.
Delenn: The truth always is.
Lyta (as a Vorlon): "We were so concerned with getting out, we never stopped to consider what we might be letting in..."

Questions:
1. Any ideas on how IPX knew about the artifact? Or all the things about Lyta? If they operate outside all government control, who are they exactly?
2. Do you find it odd that we still use thermonuclear devices so often in the future? Wouldn’t think there was a better weapon of mass destruction by the 23rd Century?
3. Speculation on what Sheridan thought Dr. Trent was lying about at the end?
4. Do you think Lyta heard any of Zack’s declaration of love?
