Recap and Discussion 2 x 12 – Acts of Sacrifice

This one is about sacrifice, both dramatic and silly.

The episode opens with a Narn battle ship allowing itself to be destroyed to save a ship filled with Narm refugees. Then we see G’kar showing this bit of footage to Sheridan and his staff. Ivanova reads a message from Mollari that says the ship was filled with weapons instead and claims the Narn use civilians as shields. G’kar appeals to Sheridan for help and Sheridan tells him he will ask his government.

The Lumati ship arrives. They are a race that Sheridan is trying to bring into the League of Non-Aligned Worlds. He tells Ivanova to do what it takes to bring them in.

G’kar goes to Delenn to ask for aid and she tells him that quite simply, the Minbari are tired of war. She also points out the hate filled behavior of the Narn Regime regarding the Centauri. G’kar says one side will destroy the other in this war.

A group of Centauri are bragging about victories and a Narn throws a bottle at them Zack breaks it up.

Ivanova meats the Lumati and there are two of them: The ambassador who will not speak to a lower being and his interpreter who speaks for him with a telepathic link. Ivanova is a bit taken aback but she rallies and begins a tour of the station.

Londo has a meeting with a Centauri merchant asking for a favor and he complains to Vir that he is now “a wishing well with legs.” One can almost feel sad for him.

The Centauri attack the Narn who threw the bottle and Zack ends up shooting him.

After a loud argument, Sheridan tells G’kar to get control of his people.

The Lumati do not understand why Franklin interferes with evolution by treating inferior races. Franklin gets furious and goes off on them but his comments go completely over their heads.

In the casino, Londo invites Garibaldi for a drink and Garibaldi says he’ll try to meet him later.

G’kar tells the Narn not to kill the Centauri, to act peaceful and they agree though as soon as the meeting is done, they kill the Centauri from the earlier fight and reveal they plan to kill all the Centauri on the station in 6 hours.

Franklin is pretty sure a Narn blade killed the Centauri and Sheridan decides not to tell Londo right away.

Londo waits and Garibaldi doesn’t show up so he leaves finally.

The Lumati are nosing around Ivanova’s room and ask to see more un pleasant parts of the station.

Earth turns down Sheridan’s request to help the Narn.

Na’Toth sees the Centauri buying blades and finds out what they’re doing. She tells G’kar and he goes to stop them.

In the Downbelow, the Lumati decide that humans are worthy to speak to since they keep all their inferiors ion one place. Susan gives up trying to explain it to them. The ambassador says he will form an alliance with Earth.

G’kar confronts the Narn, they challenge him and he beats up the leader. He is stabbed with a poison blade but it’s not enough to kill him. The other Narn agree to stand down.

The Lumati tells Ivanova they will seal the deal with sex. Ivanova is appalled.

The guilty Narn is turned over to B5 security.

After talking with Franklin and getting an idea, Ivanova invites the Lumati to her quarters and does an insane dance and chant then tells him that was human sex.

Delenn and Sheridan tell G’kar they can send food, medical supplies and such but they must do it in secret. It’s not what he wants but it is something. He has to make himself be grateful though he breaks down in private over it.

Londo says he will not cause an incident over the dead Cantauri.

Sheridan congratulates Ivanova who gets a gift from the Lumati with a note “Next time, my way.”

Garibaldi meets Londo for a drink.

Quotes:
"G'Kar, everyone in this room knows too well that the first casualty of war is always the truth."
-- Sheridan to G'Kar

"It is good to have friends, is it not, Mr. Garibaldi? Even if maybe… only for a little while."
"Even if only for a little while."
-- Londo and Garibaldi

Questions:
1. Is there any possibility that the Narn ARE using civilians as a shield? Think about it… It is a tactic often used by groups such as the Taliban in our world.
2. Do you think the Lumati are as important as Sheridan says? Do you remember ever seeing them again?
3. Was what Delenn and Sheridan offered enough? Could they have done more at this point?
4. So what exactly was the little thing that the Lumati sent to Ivanova?

I have a soft spot for this episode since I got two funny stories out of it, one a collaboration. I like those although they can be difficult, especially the funny ones.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the Narn were smuggling weapons on civilian transports. Delenn has a point here in that G'Kar squandered his chance for sympathy with his prior belligerence. He still has a way to go in his redemption.

Poor Londo. Learning the price of power.

I think we hear a mention of the Lumati again, in an aside from Delenn. But I wouldn't swear to it.

Can't even guess at the Lumati idea of sex toys or bauble rewards. DO NOT WANT
