And The Lurker’s Guide to Babylon 5

This is the episode in which Sheridan is freed, Londo and G’kar get the League of Non-aligned worlds to offer military support to Sheridan in his effort to free Earth, and Ivanova goes out in a blaze of glory – almost.

Lyta scans Michael to see if he is indeed telling them the truth – deep scan, too. He is, of course, so they have to get ready to free Mars when Sheridan is freed and he has an idea where he is kept.

Clark has a fleet of ships enhanced with shadow tech. They have spider legs – ugly as hell things. When they fight Ivanova, she makes one of her great speeches:

Susan, of course, is fatally wounded. When Sheridan comes to see her after he is freed, he tells her the truth – that she has a few days. She tells him she wants him to command the Agamemnon in the coming battle for Earth.

1. I asked in the recap and I’ll ask again – did this seem hurried to you?
2. How did Number One know that Lyta was showing her Garibaldi’s real memories?
3. Why did Londo commit to help Sheridan?
4. How did John sober up so fast from the drugs?
5. Why on Earth doesn’t Susan tell Marcus that she is not interested?

Recap and Discussion for 4 x 19 – Between the Darkness and the Light

We see Sheridan talking to Franklin and there’s a second of WTH? Then you realize that he is drugged and is talking to his interrogator. Apparently the first stuff they did didn’t work so they have settled on something more pharmacological but still Sheridan doesn’t tell them anything. He still shies away from naming anyone. They him drug more in trying to make him submit.

Garibaldi is telling a Mars resistance man he thinks he knows where they might be keeping Sheridan when he’s surrounded by Mars resistance, knocked out and hooded.

After the opening credits, Garibaldi is brought before Number One, Franklin and Lyta. Number One is ready to kill him but Franklin says let him talk. Garibaldi tells his tale of woe and no one believes him. Number says shoot him. He asks Lyta to scan him and she finds that he has P12 blocks in place and he tells her to do a deep scan, dismissing the risk because Number One is going to kill him if he can’t prove he’s telling the truth. She finds that he speaks the truth. When Number One moves to shoot him, Franklin stops her and Lyta grabs a gun and gets everyone’s attention, then she turns on Number One and shows her what was in Garibaldi’s mind. Number is convinced.

Ivanova and Marcus are aboard a White Star and they are against two earth ships. Ivanova delivers one of her speeches and blows up the ships after the crew escape pod off. They pick up the pods to take them in, some will end up jailed while others will join the Resistance.

Garibaldi uses his old mars contacts to find Sheridan’s prison. Number One says they can help get them TO the prison but then the three are on their own.

Meanwhile back on B5, Lennier comes to tell Delenn that the Advisory Council and the League of Non-aligned Worlds are having a meeting. He and Delenn crash this meeting. Londo, G’kar and the league say they want to help Sheridan because he risjed much to help protect them from the Shadow allies. They vote as soon as Delenn comes in and then they tell her that they’ve voted to assemble a fleet as a show of support. She is moved by this.

Ivanova finds out that not all of their new defectors are real defectors and that Clark has a fleet of ships using Shadow tech to ambush them. She and Marcus decide to run into the ambush then press on toward earth.

Franklin, Lyta and Garibaldi encounter 2 guards as they try to get into the prison but they kill them, not before Garibaldi is stabbed in the back.

Franklin stitches Garibaldi up while Lyta hides the bodies. They press on, wearing their old EF uniforms.

Ivanova tells the Agamemnon of her plan and even though the captain protests, he says okay. Marcus insists that she rest.

Franklin et al. reach the prison and Garibaldi talks them inside, using his ‘hero of earth’ status. Some fighting and some teep power subdue the cell guards and they find John. He is drugged, but they free him while we see blood on Garibaldi’s uniform.

They have to fight their way out, which proves fairly easy. Sheridan unloads his rifle into one man and gives Garibaldi the hairy eyeball as well.

Ivanova and Marcus arrive at Sector 300, where the ambush is supposed to be with their fleet. A bunch of jumpgates open and these butt ugly Earth Force meets Shadow ships come through. Ivanova knows they are in trouble because Shadow tech can damage the White Stars. A battle ensues and they finally defeat the fleet but as Ivanova turns to speak to Marcus, a huge hunk of metal comes right through the bridge and we see Marcus carry Susan away, then we see a shuttle leaving the wreck.

Sheridan is reunited with Delenn and they got to see Ivanova.

Susan asks how bad, and Delenn tells her she can only last a few days. She tells Sheridan she wants him to do something for her.

Sheridan boards the Agamemnon to take charge, where he will leave the campaign to Earth.

Quote:

Susan Ivanova’s speech to the captain who asks who she is:
"Who am I? I am Susan Ivanova, Commander, daughter of Andrei and Sofie Ivanov. I am the right hand of vengeance, and the boot that is gonna kick your sorry ass all the way back to Earth, sweetheart. I am death incarnate and the last living thing that you are ever going to see. God sent me."

Questions:

1. Did this feel hurried after the previous episode?

2. Was Susan softening toward Marcus?

3. Did the prison seem a little too easy?

4. Did you think John might shoot Garibaldi?

5. Do you wonder who the fake defectors are?
